A Modest Proposal: The Thread Hijack Drinking Game [vanity]
Still me. | Today | Me

Posted on 07/31/2015 11:49:41 AM PDT by Slings and Arrows

The time has come to take action against thread hijackers.

Let me begin with an example of thread hijacking:

Like most Freepers, I am pro-life. Abortion and and euthanasia appall me, and marketing the results even more so. I support candidates who oppose the culture of death, and cheer when it is thwarted.

I also do not find it necessary to mention these facts on EVERY. FREAKING. THREAD.

There is a certain type of Freeper, though, who has no such restraint. For these zealots, any thread that deviates from the pro-life cause, no matter how trivially, is a heresy that must be immediately suppressed.

You are shocked by cruelty to animals? I guess that means you couldn't care less about the cruelty of THE MILLIONS OF CHILDREN ABORTED EVERY YEAR!!!!!

You lost a beloved pet? Why can't you mourn THE THOUSANDS OF ABORTED BABIES WHO DIED THE SAME DAY?!!!!

Your car shredded its transmission and you're looking at thousands of dollars in repairs? Why aren't you thinking about THE BABIES WHO WILL NEVER GROW UP TO BE AUTO MECHANICS BECAUSE THEY WERE ABORTED?!!!!

(OK, maybe I made that last one up.)

Arguing with these people is pointless. It's the same principle as wrestling with a pig - you just get muddy and the pig enjoys it. Similarly, trying to convince them that they are being rude is a waste of time - THE CAUSE is far more important little things like courtesy and respect.

So, what can we do about it?

We can get drunk.

I hereby propose The Thread Hijack Drinking Game. The rules are simple: When a poster tries to hijack an unrelated thread to his or her pet cause, you 1) reply to the hijack attempt by quoting the text in question, followed by the word "DRINK!", and 2) Take a drink (or any volume) of your favorite beverage (alcoholic or non-alcoholic). Moderation is suggested on animal cruelty threads to avoid alcohol poisoning.

This game will not, I admit, solve the thread hijacking problem. But after a certain number of attempts we will no longer care.

And if anyone is offended by my little proposal, I can only say...

DRINK!

I know you love your fur babies, and I know you try very hard to make sure they survive. I will keep you all in my prayers, Sweetie, including you and Bryan. And please, TOL, keep me posted on the progress.

I really DO want to know! :o])

Water is my first choice and beer is my second. That’s just processed water!

I don’t do soda unless I mix it with wine, or juice of any kind because they are not kind to the kidneys. Period.

I loved reading any stories about the immigrants from Britain.

True story.

I worked with a guy that was from and lived in London. He would travel to the states a few times a year.

On one trip he was driving on a freeway near LA. He was being pulled over by a cop and when he stopped, he did what was customary in the UK. He got out of his car and started walking towards the Policeman. Much to his surprise the cop pulled his gun out, directed it at him and instructed him to lay flat on the ground.

On another trip we spent the day celebrating the 4th of July on the Mall in Washington DC. The irony was completely lost on him.

Then there was the time when he and his wife where in town and had a few extra days to explore the east coast. They drove up and down from Washington DC to Boston and back. Not just the major highways, but a number of side streets and small towns along the way. When they returned we happened to get together for a few beers and I asked him what he thought of his trip?, He said "You Americans have no creativity, virtually every town I drove trough is named after some place in England". I shot back in an instant, "We weren't Americans then".

Pippin could have explained to him that a lot of our local place names are Indian names, from the local tribes of this area.

When you see a name that looks very un-English, that could be the reason.

It would seem that the rain here has kept me up well past the Bewitching Hour for the ‘Face.

I’m going to finish my libation, then I will treat myself to couple of breathing treatments, and then I will call it “a night,” and wait for the morning to tell me how much fun I had while all y’all were sleeping!

Until then, Ta!

I’m drinking water. It’s like drinking beer, but with less bread.

Oh, they’re fine. I took the byos and Kathleen to the park for a while. Tom put James to bed early because he wouldn’t stop playing with the tv remote. Sally is at her RenFair rehearsal; DP went to get her. I’ll be going to bed very soon!

Up early tomorrow to get to the gym early so I can shower and be at a funeral at 11:00.

It was very funny.

He is a pretty smart guy, educated and well spoken.

But liberal as can be and was caught up in the anti-Bush anti-American stuff that was going a few years back.

For all the above is why I would pounce on every opportunity I could to knock him down a peg or two. Great fun for both of us, actually.

He would have this superior attitude at times. He would try to cut down Americans for their distortion of the English language. I would remind him of his own country’s distortion of the language which is unintelligible to any outsider.

I had the most fun with him when we went out after work. We would go to any number of local bars and he would try to “Chat up” the girls. While he began his effort in his full and natural British accent with a girl I would interrupt him in front of the girls and say, “Just stop it. Stop that stupid accent because nobody’s buying it”.

I just read of your Beloved Bobbie, because I went to bed early last night.

She’s in my prayers. Please keep me in the loop as well, and I hope you are on the mend.
