Scientist warns world to 'think twice before replying to alien signals from outer space'
Press Reader ^ | Thursday 23 July 2015 | VICTORIA RICHARDS

Professor Matthew Bailes said 'the history of weak civilisations contacting more advanced civilisations is not a happy one'

"... he warned that making contact with aliens capable of transmitting powerful signals to Earth over tens of thousands of light years could lead humanity into disaster, because they're likely to be so much more advanced."

mines either. The Bible has hinted numerous times of UFOs and in Ezekiel these “angelic” beings and a chariot that goes back and forth at a speed of light. For me God can create beside us, animals, plants and Earth. Why not other forms of life?

BTW...if you are correct and God created this universe for the sole purpose of mankind......we should get busy exploring his creation.

And do *what* to it? Under our current nature, I'm quite happy that we appear to be under some form of quarantine. Once the plan of redemption is completed, then, and only then, will He permit us to explore His creation.

For what it's worth, there was a time when I expressed the same sentiments you just did, but He showed me why it was not possible at this current juncture. It was a very difficult thing for me to accept at first, but His continued revelations showed me His wisdom in separating us from the rest of His creation, and I accept that now is *not* the time and season for such a thing...

If they contact us and we can respond why would they be more advanced than us? Are we going to respond to them with a string and a tin can?

(I fully agree) and I will do you one better.

God gave us this earth....our solar system...and the universe beyond.

Even if we are the sole inhabitants....he gave us these things for us to explore , expand ,and inhabit...these are our gifts of his creation.

Lets roll.

(yes I used that phrase on purpose)

I’m game. But there are some BIG problems do doing that. The same problems that any other civilization out there would face.

Given the age of the cosmos, they’d have had the same amount of time to get to where they are. Which is a good indicator of why we haven’t heard each other.

My own suspicion is that in this galaxy, civilizations - if they’re there - are spread pretty thin. And if they’re in another galaxy, we’ll never know of them, nor they of us.

Thus Fermi’s question.

My dear rikkir, I don't believe you have a good grasp on the historicity of the Bible. You make a comment that, "...when the Bible was written, we still thought the earth was flat...". Are you suggesting the Bible says the Earth is flat? Take a read of Isaiah 40:21-22, Job 26:7, Job 26:10 or Psalm 8:27. Job is considered one of the oldest, if not the oldest book in the Bible, written long before Pythagoras suggested a spherical Earth in the 6th century BC, yet it identifies the Earth as a 'circle'. The ancient Hebrew word used, 'חוג' (chuwg), can also mean 'sphere' or 'round'.

You write that, "Knowing now how almost infinite the universe is I can’t believe Earth is God’s only life giving planet." Try watching Louie Giglio (God and The Universe). Our planet is unique in the galaxy, designed specifically for human life.

I agree with your statement that, "He gave us eyes to see, and a mind capable of learning, growing, and understanding for a reason.", but we disagree on that reason! We have those gifts so that we can more appreciate all He has done for us, how He created a universe for us to marvel at, how, as children of the King, he rewarded us with far more beautiful and amazing things, than we can ever imagine, to show us how much He loves us and how unique and how sepecial we are to Him!

That sounds like a sidebar and I would like to know what you have been shown.

Have you had any visions?

I have...but I lack the ability to make sense of them...I'm am neither a scientist nor a theologian....although I think in the future they both will meet.

Science will one day confirm what was previously taken on faith (there is life beyond this material life)

Not to get into a religious debate, because I believe in God, and am a Christian, but when the Bible was written, we still thought the earth was flat, and that the Sun revolved around the earth.

You obviously haven’t read God’s word.

"... he warned that making contact with aliens capable of transmitting powerful signals to Earth over tens of thousands of light years..."

So if they're 20,000 light years away and they can travel at the speed of light to check out who sent the message they could be on our doorstep wiping us out in 40,000 years.

I say go for it! Our descendants will barely remember that we existed anyway.

I can relate to that and quite another possibility.

“when the Bible was written, we still thought the earth was flat, and that the Sun revolved around the earth. ... Science gives us the ability to better see God’s wonders.”

Even though the Bible was penned by men who had little understanding of the way the the Lord made the universe, He was the Author.

The Levitical laws, for instance: People had no concept of germs or bacteria until recent history. But Leviticus says not to eat from a broken plate, but to throw it out. The reason is that bacteria will grow in the crack. Mankind had no concept of bacterial contamination until “modern” times. But there was the caution, for thousands of years, before we understood it.

The Psalms say the Lord forms us in the inward parts, “woven” together. We now know what DNA looks like. We are, literally, woven together. But we had no idea how literal that was until science could describe it.

The writers of Scripture did not have to understand everything they were writing. The Lord moved them to write, and they wrote beyond their understanding.

My guess is that the universe is teaming with life. That is because that is what God is like. He is a joyful Creator! Intelligent life? I have no idea. We aren’t told either way.

The day that a probe returns a microbial sample proving the existence of life on another planet will not shake my faith one bit. On the contrary, I will say, “Science, what took you so long?”

Another poster referenced Bible passages that gave scientifically accurate descriptions of the world.

It’s easy for the Bible-illiterate to call believers “flat earthers.”

Ducking out of space aka “space time folding” was something even Einstein theorized about to achieve faster than light point to point travel.

Just because it isnt possible now with out current level of technology doesnt mean it isnt possible.

There is something between isolated particle theory and gravitational drives here that applies...but that is instinctual...I am no scientist.

I firmly think the key to faster that light travel is unlocking the mystery of gravity's effect on local space time.

The energy required to break away from local space time and the gravity well must be enormous.

Dare I say it....God like.

Bailes said aliens who could transmit such a powerful signal that it could reach Earth over tens of thousands of light years would have to be far more advanced than us.

If the speed of light is the limit, why worry? Any consequences of our RF diarrhea are millennia away.

Much more interesting would be to receive a reply right away. That would mean (a) it's possible to beat the speed of light and (b) some aliens have figured out how.

If such a civilization were to exist, it might be tempted to blanket the universe with listening posts that watch for unusual activity and report back over the faster-than-light channel. I can see where they might find us interesting, but we would have a few break-thrus to make before becoming any sort of threat to them.

Once they picked up our network television programs we would be quarantined as some kind of insidious, mind destroying viral plague.

If anybody is out there doing that it must not leave a trace. That we’ve thought to look for. But tremendous energy expenditures should leave some kind of signature.
