(CNN)—Weeks after making headlines amid accusations that she is a white woman passing herself off as African-American, Rachel Dolezal says she is no longer confused about who she is.
She is a black woman, she told Vanity Fair.
"It's not something that I can put on and take off anymore," Dolezal said. "Like I said, I've had my years of confusion and wondering who I really (was) and why and how do I live my life and make sense of it all, but I'm not confused about that any longer. I think the world might be -- but I'm not."
Dolezal stepped down as head of the Spokane, Washington, chapter of the NAACP in June over criticism that she's portrayed herself as black, even though her parents told a local newspaper that the 37-year-old was born white. She said then that she identified as black, and Dolezal maintains that she wasn't being deceptive.

She doesn’t know anything BUT deceit, and now she’s deceiving herself.

In this upside down world, it’s a good defense. If they’re nuts enough to think Bruce Jenner is female, then Rachel identifying as black is perfectly feasible.
We’re so nuts. I am stunned at how quickly our culture is sliding down that slippery slope. God help us.
She needs to pull a Mattress Girl and release a porn tape to “raise awareness” and “prove her assertions”.

The important word here is "anymore". She used to be able to put it on and take it off, but she has identified with her false self so much, she has become the character she is playing. It's something that happens to con-men, who often can't remember what is a lie and what is true anymore, and to a lesser degree some actors. I know there was an actor, I want to say Gary Oldman, who literally forgot what his real voice was and had to go to therapy to remember what he sounded like without "doing" a voice.
Rachel Dolezal may really believe her lie, but that doesn't give her a pass. And just because she has been successful in deceiving herself doesn't mean she is not still deceiving others.
She is mentally ill, but in our culture, we celebrate that. It's really sad.
She is vindicated by Bruce Jenner’s sexual identity odyssey and the effusive “how can we get closer to kiss his ass” mentality of media. It merely takes the declaration of “I am” now to BE.
