Donald Trump is not backing down on his comments criticizing Arizona Sen. John McCain. And he has fresh venom for his fellow 2016 contenders as well.
A number of my competitors for the Republican nomination have no business running for president. I do not need to be lectured by any of them. Many are failed politicians or people who would be unable to succeed in the private sector. Some, however, I have great respect for, he wrote in a USA Today op-ed published Sunday evening.
During an appearance at the Family Leadership Summit in Ames, Iowa, Trump created an uproar when he told pollster Frank Luntz of McCain: Hes not a war hero. He was a war hero because he was captured. I like people who werent captured.
The comments were the latest in a back-and-forth between Trump and the Arizona senator, who went on record in a New Yorker interview last week, calling the candidates supporters at a Phoenix rally crazies.
Trumps remarks provoked widespread condemnation, but he responded to the backlash by doing what he did before on immigration: doubling down.
The reality is that John McCain the politician has made America less safe, sent our brave soldiers into wrong-headed foreign adventures, covered up for President Obama with the VA scandal and has spent most of his time in the Senate pushing amnesty. He would rather protect the Iraqi border than Arizonas, Trump wrote.
Echoing a campaign statement, he noted his support for getting a New York City memorial built for Vietnam War veterans and his work in financing a parade in the same city for 25,000 veterans.

Cruz and Trump,
the Tag Team to
Make America Great!
Trump is right.
Mcain is not a HERO when it comes to what he has done to protect America as a Senator. As shown with his pictures with know terrorists
He ranks with others like Graham and Schumer.
How can Mr. Trump not respect Mr. Cruz? And how could Mr. Cruz have a sincere respect for Mr. Trump.
I bet Mr. Cruz and her associates at Goldman know full well the kind of businessman Trump is. And they’re well aware of his patriotism.
I’m sure this has been made known to Ted as well.
Personally, I’d like to see both of them join forces as Independents, telling the GOPe where they can stick their globalist ways.
I guarantee you tens of millions of excited, motivated voters will enthusiastically support that kind of partnership. I will be among them, of course.
Think of the people they’ll bring on board to right the wrongs of the past 25 years.
Not that I expected it, but we really don’t know what was discussed last Wednesday when they had their meeting in NY, but it was more than discussing the weather.
BTW, did Trump ever get the requested FBI protection? I don’t remember hearing/seeing anything.
That’s ‘How could Mr. Cruz NOT have a sincere respect for Mr. Trump’
Need more coffee!
Name that blowhard!
“I have tremendous respect for McCain but I dont buy the war hero thing. Anybody can be captured. I thought the idea was to capture them. As far as Im concerned he sat out the war.”
Nope. Not Donald Trump. Al Franken.
Why would he criticize Trump?
Cruz doesn’t need to make other candidates look bad ... so HE can look good.
So Al Franken thinks Senator McCain sat out the war? What a jerk!
Senator Franken...just goes to show how low we can go as a country.
Not a good idea...for either one of them.
I hope every Freeper here with political ambitions takes note of Trump’s methods. Start a fire, and keep it burning, doubling down and defending yourself, staying strong no matter what, and watch the free advtertisements just flow right in.
It’s called free speech. Good for Ted. McCain is truly a war hero but he hasn’t done anything for conservatives during his last 30 years in Congress.
Why do you say that?
McCain is ‘truly a war hero’ you say.
Other than his stay at the HH, what did he do in active duty that makes him a ‘hero’?
A lot of other people were POW’s in Vietnam and other wars, but I don’t remember any of those guys attaining the ‘hero’ status back home.
Some tell me ‘because he flew a plane off an aircraft carrier!!’. Sure, that’s a skill that others do not have the skill or guts to do. But so have many, many other fighter pilots taken off and landed on a carrier too. Are they all automatically ‘heros’?
What specifically has McCain done in active service that makes him head and shoulders above almost everybody else?
I wasn’t paying a great deal of attention to McCain When he was a POW . don’t know what Record he had prior—I do believe he was better than John F.Kerry and do not recall McCain ever throwing any service ribbons or medals over the fence -as Kerry did do. I seem to recall controversy that McCain was offered special treatment because his daddy was some muckedy duck politician. Books published by other POW didn’t say a lot about McCain. (least those I have read) My biggest complaint is I’ve not seen a great deal of good politics from McCain —and his actions when his bud John F.Kerry was a wannabe President I found questionable and bordering on contemptible.Trump does NOT owe McCain —NOR Veterans any apology. But has voiced what several others have. of McCain the harry Reid of the Republicrat Party.
Ted Cruz is showing the way to all these republicans that are on the list as candidates. You do not attack other candidates, and you save your invectives for the democrats. The more you attack each other, the less time you have to attack the other side. These other candidates are showing their stupidity.
You make a good point. I like Trump a lot and I think the bottom feeder candidates are piling on. Who are they to tell him to drop out of the race? Trump and Cruz are the only candidates to take on the media which is our real enemy.
No, Trump said it FOUR times...
So, let me ask...did Trump say (courageously) that McCain isn’t a war hero as some of his supporters maintain...
Or, upon his “clarification” did he call Mac a war hero FOUR different times?
Interesting that not even Trump supporters can get their talking points straight.
