At 7:49 a.m. EDT today New Horizons made history when it zoomed within 7,800 miles of Pluto, the most remote object ever visited in the Solar System.
Pluto has a very complex surface. The fact that large areas show few craters as compared to say, Ceres or Vesta shows that there have relatively recent changes there. Maybe very recent. Alan Stern, principal investigator for the mission, was asked by a report at this mornings press conference if it snows on Pluto. His answer: It sure looks like it.

That’s some distant real estate right there.

Are his body and tail on the other side?

Great picture - however - I’m all for (unmanned) space exploration, but for $700 million is that all we get?

At 7,800 miles, one would think they would have a camera that could take more close up pictures......Maybe I’m expecting too much and trying to compare this one to the Hubbell

The pics will get even better when the craft is finished with its pass. Its expected to start returning data in about 5 hours.

That pic isn’t from the closest point. The craft has been busy with the science and won’t turn its dish back toward earth for another hour and then it will be sending data home for another 16 months.

I’m thinking we might get closer, and then maybe some data processing. On the news it said it would be able to see “baseball field” dimensions. I think we’ve been spoiled by Google Earth.
