At 7,800 miles, one would think they would have a camera that could take more close up pictures......Maybe I’m expecting too much and trying to compare this one to the Hubbell
That pic isn’t from the closest point. The craft has been busy with the science and won’t turn its dish back toward earth for another hour and then it will be sending data home for another 16 months.
I’m thinking we might get closer, and then maybe some data processing. On the news it said it would be able to see “baseball field” dimensions. I think we’ve been spoiled by Google Earth.
The camera they use was probably the highest resolution available 10-12 years ago when they were building the spacecraft.
It's moving fast, and there ain't much light out there.
Maybe Im expecting too much and trying to compare this one to the Hubbell
Hubble can spend weeks doing one shot. This probe doesn't have that luxury. There's no real way to brake it.
Oh, no, this photo is not from 7800 miles - from much farther out taken on the approach. We will not start getting the photos from the closest approach until sometime tomorrow and the full data download taken in highest resolution will not be completed until October 2016 (yes, 2016, not 2015) as the download speed is about 1k (as in...a very, very slow dial-up modem).
