freerepublic | July 10,2015 | greeneyes

Posted on 07/10/2015 12:45:50 PM PDT by greeneyes

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks.

No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

Nice solution to keeping small rodents away from your strawberries!

Thank you for caring about Johnny Marcella. Have you gotten back to gardening lately?

We live on the California coast on the very southern edge of the Pacific North West. Average summer highs are in the high 60s and nights are low 60s with little or no rain but lots and lots of fall and winter rains. Mildew and aphids are a problem. We have been retired for many years

It would be lovely if we could do that. Take the excess rain and put it where it’s in short supply - prevent flooding that way too.

Are you experiencing excess rain too? Thanks for the pictures. Is that a new variety of corn or the same one you usually plant?

We don’t get summer rains like the midwest but we could use couple of inches this year for sure. There is a El Nino setting up at the equator and that could spell lots and lots of rain for most of California… or maybe not?

My first year to successfully grow cucumbers. They are weighing in from 1.5-2+ pounds. They’re huge! I’m making my first (attempt) batch of sweet relish this weekend. Will try some pickles and onions with the next batch. I only put one plant in the ground and it went wild! The soil at our new place is pretty good. I guess it used to be a diary farm. Plants are loving my garden!

I love the covers over your strawberries! That looks wonderful! And may I ask what you have between and around the plants? Seems to keep the weeds away and looks lovely.

I’ve still got a huge pile of old goat poop for my garden. Nothing like manure!

“Thank you for caring about Johnny Marcella. Have you gotten back to gardening lately?”

It’s too hot here for me to start anything. I would have to get stuff in containers in March/April/May, because June is the start of too hot weather.

Right now for a few days, we are in the 90s but 101 starts again next Tuesday.
