The mother of a man who tried to launch a firework off the top of his head for July Fourth and was killed instantly said Monday she's advocating for stricter controls about who can use the explosives.
Devon Staples, 22, and his friends had been drinking and setting off fireworks Saturday night in a backyard in Staples' eastern Maine hometown, Calais, when the accident happened with a reloadable fireworks mortar tube, police have said.

Can’t legislate against stupidity.
I don’t remember the rules ever telling you to put it on your head and light it.
It wasn’t an accident.
Mom,I know that you don’t want to hear this right now,but your son was a victim of his own stupidity/drunkenness.
WINNER
I agree, there should be a warning not to put explosives on your head. It’s an easy mistake to make, I was about to do it myself before I came across this informative article.
yeah... her idiot special snowflake son isn’t at fault for getting drunk, sticking a fireworks mortar to his face, and then lighting it.
instead, it’s the government’s fault for not protecting him from himself.
seems legit.

Uh, lady, I am very sorry for your loss, but your child did a stupid thing. It was not an accident. He did it on purpose.
Then these tragedies would not occur, and the rest of us can go about our business.
Maybe its too soon, but I still don’t know what happened to him. Did he have the baseplate on top of his head and it smacked him, broke his neck, etc?
Did he have it aimed down into his head and it shot down into his brain?
Did the infernal device simply explode and he joined the pink mist club?
Or did it blow and the concussion simply blew out his lamp?
What exactly happened?
They should sell launching helmets, safety tested and approved for this application. /S
I thought being an idiot was already illegal???
How ma beer...
So now they want a MENSA test to purchase and use fireworks? Good grief, can’t be accountable for your own actions so let the government be responsible for us? We see how well that works.
You spawned the idiot, don’t take it out on us.
“My son is a famous dumbass, and his death with be better served if I lobby to take more fun and freedom away from people! Then I’ll feel complete!”
Forty five years ago when I was taught how to handle powder, I don’t think anyone warned me specifically not to put a plaster or stick on my head and set it off. I guess I was just lucky that I never did any such thing. The government wasn’t taking good enough care of me.
“The state should consider requiring safety training courses before allowing someone to use them, she said. “
I guess the first thing they should cover in this course is to not launch a firework from your head.
Ive never seen a firework that did not say “light fuse, get away.”
Stupid is as stupid does. At least he won’t be reproducing.
