On his last full day in space aboard the International Space Station (ISS), NASA astronaut Terry Virts at last captured a truly iconic shot of one of the Seven Wonders of the World the Great Pyramids of Giza in Egypt.
Virts snapped the exquisitely sharp view of the Egyptian pyramids at Giza on June 10 looking out from the stations windows, just hours before entering the Soyuz return spaceship and closing the hatches behind him for his planned plummet back to Earth.
He proudly posted the spectacular photo on his twitter social media account from space while serving as station commander of Expedition 43.
The three pyramids of Giza dominate the fantastically beautiful photo. They are located about 9 km (5 mi) from the town of Giza on the Nile, and some 25 km (15 mi) southwest of the Egyptian capital city of Cairo.
The Great Sphinx is also located nearby the massive complex of the Great Pyramids and visible in the stunning photo. See map below.

I had a SIL (now ex) that had a big time problem. She was as addicted as any alcoholic/drug addict.
And I hear YOU on the losing weight.
I watched a show sometime back that showed a number of famous attractions and what you don’t see just out of camera range or just out of the frame in the typical tourist photo. The Pyramids and the rapidly encroaching city was one of them.
I was amazed the first time I went to the Augusta National GC. The surrounding area is the last thing I expected after watching the Masters on TV for so many years
Also on the n2yo.com site,
10 day predictions instead of forecast, I got the term wrong.
There is a live feed of the Earth when the ISS is in daylight.
I also heard that in some states like Delaware, their casinos are going broke ‘cause the market is too saturated.
The airlines and tourist industry like to take pics which suggest this tourist attraction is somehow far away and exotic. They avoid pics like this...
Get a load of the traffic....What a dump.
In fact you can buy a McWhopper, get tickets to the Pyramid attraction and be there before you're done with the burger.
thats a terrible addiction. i’m embarrassed how weak willed i am in AC. one time my GF didn’t know i had my bank card on me. lost an extra couple hundred.
it’s like i’m in a trance with the constant hits of serotonin and dopamine on each spin.
they say food, gambling, heroin and other things affect the same part of the brain.
sorry about your ex SIL
four casinos closed this year in AC. yonkers, kennedy airport, PA, AC, the indian ones, too many.
I expect them to start taking them apart soon
bump
a little sad
Thanks beaversmom. It's a nice shot, makes it easy to see that the Great Pyramid has more mass than the rest of the Giza pyramids combined. From the ground it doesn't really look that way.
Oh yeah...I’m sure it’s setting off all kinds of triggers in the brain. I’ve never had a big desire to do it. Hate to lose money, but I can’t say, I’m w/out addiction, but it has just manifested in different forms for me.
We had two very nice mountain towns here in CO...right next door to each other. Blackhawk and Central City. Yeah, they were touristy, but they still had an Old West flavour. It’s been quite a few years now, but they went low stakes gambling and it ruined them, IMO. I have no desire to go anywhere near there.
And coming up from NM last week I saw some in the Ruidoso area...Indian owned ones. I guess it could be a fun deal to do once in a blue moon, but I’m such a tight wad, I would have a hard time going more than that.
Thanks about SIL. She didn’t have an optimum childhood like so many of us. Her mom was overbearing and had a some screws loose. SIL used gambling to fill some kind of hole(s) in her. :(
Is that a man’s face north and center, I mean, if you bend around just right?
No no no
I ain’t bending over no way.
the big Pyramids are what... 500 feet on a side?
so that makes the slums 6oo/700 feet away?
Still pointy-side up, I see.
It's happening to the pueblos around Albuquerque. Each and every one has at least one casino, so there are about nine of them surrounding the metro area.
Saw two in Ruidoso when kids and I went through on Sunday.
Did you get some cherry cider in Carrizozo?
No I didn’t. :( But I think we did go through that town on our way back up. Name sounds very familiar! Now I know for next time. :)
I was in Cairo, and my hotel overlooked the pyramids. Yes, close to ‘civilization’. And on a clear day we could see the pyramids at Saqqara (Memphis).
Contrary to popular thought/conception, the Step Pyramid at Saqqara was not the first pyramid. The pyramids at Giza predate it. The Step Pyramid at Memphis was an attempt to copy the pyramids at Giza.
