There was a time when libraries had microfilm of old newspapers. I cannot find anything like that today. I am specifically looking for articles published in 1983 and 1984 by the Los Angeles Times.
Ancestry dot com has obits from LA. ProQuest ($$$) has some things http://pqasb.pqarchiver.com/latimes/faq.html#available
For something that old, it’s likely on microfiche at the library.
Can’t you still go to the library and look at the microfilm?

LA Times has archives indexed on the web, but they seem to charge if you actually want to read the article.
newspapers . com
highbeam . com
newspaperarchive . com
Might cost something.
They don't want the children to know.
Google it.
And be willing to pay a fee for reading archived articles.
Some newspapers have archives on line going back decades....for a price.
Great link. Thanks much.
What article are you looking for?
This is from the world of genealogy research. There is a free web site which has links to thousands of sites related in any way to genealogy research. It has a specific category of newspapers. Check it out:

The description for the list says there are over 800 links in it.
A very good site, although it is not free, is

do the search but limit it to Jan 1987 to Dec 1987. It's everything including newspapers. Like a regular search.
For newspapers alone I thought google News could do it but it might be limited to just the time google existed. I tried it and got just one site and when I clicked it I got a suspicious "you need to download this update to continue." No thanks. The site was not a newspaper BTW.
I had a lot of fun going through the Gainesville Sun archives.
Some headlines only

As I looked further, highbeam.com may not go back far enough. It says over 25 years, but if you already are finding back to 1987, that may not be your source.
I was just reading The Alabama Citizen, December 6, 1913 (random pick I’m in Michigan).
TREMENDOUS resource. Thanks again, dfwgator. HOORAY Google!
If you are a cardholder in good standing check your local library databases for historical, genealogical and newspaper archives. It should be completely free of charge.
