CARDIFF, Wales, April 23 (UPI) -- Researchers in Wales and England have developed a highly effective asthma drug, and in the process may have uncovered the disorder's root cause. In a recent study, scientists explored the breathing disorder via both mouse and human airway models, using tissue from asthmatic and non-asthmatic people. Their work highlighted the body's calcium sensing receptor (CaSR) as the main culprit in triggering asthma symptoms -- airway narrowing, airway twitchiness and inflammation.
Much as the immune system of allergy patients overreacts to pollen or other particulates, the research models showed CaSR went into overdrive when asthmatic tissue was irritated by external stimuli.
The research also demonstrated the impressive effectiveness of a class of drugs known as calcilytics, which manipulate CaSR and in lab experiments reversed asthma symptoms. Calcilytics are currently mostly used to treat osteoporosis.
"Our findings are incredibly exciting," lead researcher Daniela Riccardi, a professor at Cardiff University School of Biosciences, said in a press release. "For the first time we have found a link airways inflammation, which can be caused by environmental triggers - such as allergens, cigarette smoke and car fumes -- and airways twitchiness in allergic asthma."
"If this research proves successful we may be just a few years away from a new treatment for asthma, and we urgently need further investment to take it further through clinical trials," said Dr. Samantha Walker, the policy and research director at Asthma UK.

My son has it very mildly, still worth checking out indeed.
I am waiting to Primatene Mist to be re-released. Meddling government had it banned for CFC’s. They have supposedly submitted a new product for approval. It worked better than any prescription crap and lasted longer.

First thought that entered my mind.
Mine was seemingly related to my acid-reflux. Now that Obamacare has forced my insurance to no longer cover my inhaler, I really do suffer with it. The powder based inhalers do not work for me due to the way my throat is constructed - too large of a uvula for the powder to pass.

You need to hold your breath for a few minutes after you turn away, then exhale slowly. it helps.

Apparently the drugs that have showed so much promise are already on the market. They are used to treat osteoporosis. Why not just start prescribing them for asthma?
THis crap happens all the time. They’ll be a drug that has been on the market for years. Cheap. Find out it’s good to treat something else. Rename it. Patent it as a treatment for XXXX. And then it goes from $2 a pill to $200 a dose.

So the environment doesn’t CAUSE Asthma- it just aggravates it

Wooops- now apparently Asthma is CAUSED by the environment
So nice that they’ve “nailed down the CAUSE of asthma”
caSR isn’t asthma- it simply is a mechanism by which asthma symptoms get triggered- what we need to find out is what CAUSES caSR to malfunction like it does- in normal people it doesn’t CAUSE SYMPTOMS of asthma to occur when enviro triggers activate it to react the way it does

Which means they will develop a drug to ‘normalize’ caSR so that it functions the way it is supposed to=- or nearly functiosn the way it is supposed to- but in order to find such a drug, they will need to find out what CAUSES caSR to malfunction (or they will just have to stumble on a drug that suppresses caSR without knowing WHY it does)- when they find out WHY caSR malfunctions, then they will have the answer to what CAUSES asthma- so until then people claiming environmental conditions CAUSE asthma don’t understand science- and these same people turn around and call people who deny man is ‘causing climate change’ don’t understand science?

Well obviously something was going awry/into overdrive- but what is CAUSING it to go awry? Find out that answer, and you will be very close to finding the true CAUSE of asthma- environmental issues do NOT cause asthma contrary to our _resident’s claim about His daguther- This very same _resident who accuses us of ‘denying science’ because we don’t believe that man’s contribution of just 0.00137% CO2 to the atmosphere’s total volume can possibly be causing climate change
