If theres any weapon that deserves the most credit for beating back Nazi Germany, it might be the legendary bolt-action Mosin-Nagant rifle.
The Soviet Union made them in absolutely huge numbers and theyre still available and rather cheap compared to their contemporaries. Whats more extraordinary is that the basic design is more than a century old.
Even now, rebels carry Mosin-Nagants alongside more modern weapons as in conflicts from Ukraine to the Middle East.

Mosin-Nagant ping
The thing that keeps the Mosin-Nagant going is the cheap availability of spare parts and ammunition. It’s still a very good sniping rifle up to around 400-600 yards range.
Really? Patton said the best weapon was the M1Garand. Chesty Puller preferred the Springfield 03. To say that the Soviet union beat the Germans is to poke a finger in the eye of the Americans that fought and died in Europe. You discredit the 101st Airborne that held out in Bastone. Give me a Springfield.
I have one but it won’t expel the used cartridge. It stays in the barrel and you have to clear it out.
Yes....a good bolt action rifle. I have a 1936 K98 made in the Mauser Oberndorf factory (SN 42) that is a meticulously crafted marvel that would more than equal what a MN could do.
The problem is numbers and accommodations made in producing the weapon in mass quantities. It was the same for the main battle rifle, the main tank (T34 and the M-4) - the main anything, really. Production. At the end of the war, this country was producing a Liberty ship each day.
If I had my druthers, the Garand is the battle weapon of choice among these. Millions built and used by our forces. There is a reason why Patton valued it so.
Check the head space...
I have two K98s(all matching numbers).I’m happy!!!
I own an 1891 Argentine Mauser that resembles the Mauser in the picture. A good shooter. Damned accurate.
I have it cleaned and “retired” since ammo is hard to find and I have other good shooters...
The ONLY drwback was the”En-Bloc”clip.You can’t”Top Them Off”!!!
Check the head space...I second this recommendation. A head space issue can be a safety concern. One sign that this is the issue is if the spent cartridge is bulged out at all. Does it slide easily in out of the chamber, or once fired will it not chamber like an unfired cartridge. Also, check the extractor.
“I have one but it wont expel the used cartridge. It stays in the barrel and you have to clear it out.”
Perhaps you have a broken extractor. That should be a cheap and easy fix.
Well....you gotta consider your 8 shots against Hans’ five shots from a bolt action. I’ve got 4 Garands and they’ll each ring off 8 shots before the other guy could get off two.
The drawback is the “pling!” you get when that “church bell” steel clip ejects. A dead giveaway :0)
I’ve had mixed luck with the Mosin’s. I bought one from a coworker for $50, and made the mistake of not checking the barrel carefully. It turned out to be corroded so badly that the rifle was basically useless (couldn’t hit the broadside of a barn with it).
All said, I’d much rather have any number of other rifles. About the only thing the Mosin has going for it is that it’s cheap.
Yes...maybe....but excessive throat erosion and bad head spacing will let the brass expand and lock up, too. If it is wear, then the muzzle would show bad wear too.
I have one that I bought for 80 bucks. I shortened the barrel by about 3 inches, installed an after market fiberglass stock with a monte carlo cheekpiece, did a trigger job and mounted a 2.5 power long eye relief scope where the original rear sights were.
It makes a fine scout type rifle for deer and black bear. The 7.62 X 54 round is quite adequate for most North American game. Kicks like hell though.
I’ve got a cherry later mauser model 1909 Argentine. Longer barrel than a regular Mauser but a very NICE rifle.
You’re right though, the 7.65 ammo is not really easy to find whenever you want it.
No big deal, but six us army divisions held an entire German army off for three days while the 101st was moving into Bastogne.
At least one, the 28th division, Pennsylvania NG, was written off as destroyed in action.
The 101st wasn’t alone.
“The ONLY drwback was theEn-Blocclip.You cantTop Them Off!!!”
Not true at all. Your instruction on the use of the Garand was poor and incomplete. It is as easily topped off as a K98.
This needs to be on the thread:
