Alas, Jeeps are popular and mainstream, at least in the South, so affording one is a problem.
I’m looking to find what I can get for $5000.
Not much, yes, but they exist and I believe something suitable can be found.
The impetuous was passing up, and forever regretting, one for $2000. Total POS yet inspiring.
The confirmation was a nice model for $5000 in good shape - except for the liberal bumper stickers it was entirely covered with (one power sander and all would be good).
So... Thoughts on what tarnished gems may be found? What to look for? Money is an object, I’ve little to spare, but gotta start somewhere when my free LEAF lease is up next year.

You are going from a Nissan Leaf to a Jeep?! That is wonderful.

I think there are decent Jeeps out there for around $5K, but you have to search. Jeeps hold their resale value very well.

The standard "Turtle" cars, not as much.

These are all different makes and models of cars made these days. Really. (nissan altima, toyota camry, ford fusion, hyundai genesis, honda accord, chevy cruze hybrid, audi a4, lexus is 600ls). They all look the same to me.

I know this is a late response, but Feb/March is when NASCAR is gearing up. When Sunday is your day off for the week....

I got my ‘07 in ‘10, and MrsSgtBob’s ‘07 in ‘11 (she threatened to commandeer mine). And both are equipped with Dana 44s front, and rear. I think we got a deal at 21k each. I didn’t know at the time that those were only standard on the Rubicon model. We have the Sahara.

I didn’t grab the Mooney...heck I owned it before. I knew all of her hairs and warts...and I also recalled the price of annual.

Thinking about a C172 with the Penn Yan 180 conversion. We have one in our CAP Squadron, and the full fuel useful load is 1071 lbs. A true four place bird.

Nice shade of blue. Ford blue? Overall work of art.

I wished I had a building to do that level surgery. Just an open carport.

When I get to an engine in that CJ7, it will be farmed out. The Willys runs but that aftermarket indian 1 barrel is in need of rebuild/replace.

I seem to be out of the woods with medical and dental -ists sending a bill every couple of weeks for a few hundred bucks, I hope to get that Weber two barrel progressive kit.

If I could be left alone on weekends, that would be huge boost but fat chance until maybe end of month. I can get back to nit pick jobs on that CJ7.

Get the carb on and set then get lift kit and tires budgeted. After that farm out the steering box rebuild and some other stuff a lift would be better suited for. Then hope that is it for a while......

That picture is not my exact Jeep, but pretty close.

I have the rock rails, the oversize tires, the lift kit, and of course the rest of the Rubicon package. I did some off roading and "rock" climbing, but it was tame compared to what I see some Jeeps doing on YouTube. I love my Jeep too much to subject it to some the abuse I see there!!!

I know, I love a re-built engine. My friend re-built an Austin engine a few years ago, and we spent some time re-painting the block in original colors. My gosh, it was beautiful!

The CJ7 is an amazing vehicle and design. Classic, really.

I have the opportunity to take a Piper as my own, but I am balking. The annual, the fuel costs, the insurance, the FAA, all the rest. I just don't have the energy for it anymore.

Classic cars, Jeeps, yes. Those are easier. Aviation is serious business. Like owning a boat. You have to respect the Sea and you have to respect the Air. Both have tried to kill me on many occasions.

You guys surely did.

The Dana 44 is about $2,700 new, uninstalled.

And used, they are very hard to fine in good, unfouled up condition.

The axel is an incredible piece of engineering. You should be proud to own 2 of them.

Or more precisely, you own 4 of them on two Jeeps!

Hope this fall.

That is definitely a sharp looking engine.

Hope this fall.

You will get there!

A little at a time works best. Sometimes, things sidetrack us. We had a incredible summer storm jack us up about 6 weeks ago. This would have registered as a Cat 1 Hurricane. It was beyond incredible in force.

I have been dealing with the damage and all sorts of things since. And then, it seems that every weekend, there is something else going on. I am not complaining, I still enjoyed some beach days and days off - but when you have a project to work on, sometimes it gets overcome by events.

I dropped by the languishing project CJ7 in the building and maybe some evenings this week.

If not, there is Willys stuff here to do including as much as I dread it, finishing the signals wiring and installing some LED interior and underhood lights. Too many memories of being broke down in the dark.

One up by the fan on the driver’s side fender for air and being away from the exhaust manifold. The other will go on the passenger side rear, plenty of room there.

Amazon has some great deals on those LED aux. lights.

A few months ago I learned of a dirt regular road that bypasses 26 for a few miles and the interchange to I77 where people wipe out. I want to run it. Be fun to custom mount a Go Pro for a few different angles.

Rebuilding is fun If you have time and MONEY!

Got my 2005 TJ off the lot and MONEY is what I spent to get it just the way I want it.

But I refuse to run it hard or take chances, you have got to take care of You’re equipment.

Parts are too pricey for me to beat stuff up.

I ordered the weber 2 barrel conversion kit yesterday and will be here in a week or so.

Once it’s stable running again, I can roll it out in the daylight and tackle other stuff.

Springs, tires/wheels are next. Steering box after that. That’s a shop job. If I had lift, I could do it myself. The box is up in the frame.

Looked at CAP if I get a pilot’s license. Doubt I’d be much good in any real capacity.

There is plenty of flying, and non-flying jobs in Senior, Composite, and Cadet squadrons. Check them out.
