Actors were once strapping hunks, thick-thighed he-men who had only to arrive at a film premiere to make everyones eyes bulge.
These Adonises towered above lesser mortals and had their suits made specially for them because they were such muscular specimens.
Thats the way things were when the likes of John Wayne (6ft 4in), Gregory Peck (6ft 3in), Charlton Heston (6ft 3in) and Clint Eastwood (6ft 4in) were in their prime.
They were big men playing big characters, often on top of enormous horses or engaged in butch boxing bouts.
Compare that with the recent Oscars ceremony, when our own Eddie Redmayne was announced as winner of the Best Actor category for his performance as Stephen Hawking in The Theory Of Everything. The audience members sitting near him leapt to their feet to applaud and little Eddie was suddenly dwarfed.
The actress Cate Blanchett loomed over him she looked so much bigger than him, he could have been her lunch. And yet Redmayne, at 5ft 10in, is one of the taller modern male stars.

That's how global warming became "settled science."
Tom Cruise does his some of his own motorcycle and car stunt work. He’s a pretty decent rider/driver/pilot.
I think he drove most of the car scene in Jack Reacher.
That being said... and he being all the things he is... I still generally like his movies.
And, have you noticed, today’s suits give men hourglass figures, lol.
I saw Schwarzenegger in person as well, and was amazed at how small he was. Close quarters in an elevator. I expected to be intimidated, but he was quite the runt.
Amazed to this day at how the screen image differs.
Liam Neeson - mmmmm
Soooo glad to see him thriving.
More tall and muscular/beefy Brit actors (6’ tall or more): Benedict Cumberbatch, Tom Wilkinson, Damian Lewis, Daniel Day-Lewis, Hugh Bonneville and Ciaran Hinds.
George Raft, 5’7”. And, hey, if were going way back, John Wilkes Booth was only 5’8”
Muir_redwoods, 6’2” :)
It kills the romance - that's why I notice it.
"How did he do such fantastic stunts with such little feet?"
I’m tall. 5’9” and I wear 2-3 inch heels when we go somewhere. Today’s stars all seem shrimpy to me. Probably why none of them are attractive to me.
I don’t care for little men. Lol
Stallone is quite short.
Russell Crowe seems pretty masculine to me, not a metrosexual, but who knows? Same with Mel Gibson..I think they’re on the short side, though..at any rate, they’re talented...
Funny, for some reason I always think of Damian Lewis as short.

Not so much to admire, unless filandering, infidelity and forced abortions are your thing.
Dustin Hoffman 5-6 Tom Cruise 5-7 Al Pacino 5-7 Robert DeNiro, ‘the giant’, 5-10
Haven't seen his Jack Reacher movies.
did like him in Collateral.
Esp. the scene w/ him in an alley accosted by 3 hoods. His pistol work was ...wow. Watched that scene numerous times.
I think he went to Blackwater or another North Carolina training academy. I have the DVD somewhere, and the extras show him training. He’s quite a quick study.
