The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks.
No matter what, you wont be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!
NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.
Supplement is good, and it trains you to provide for you and your family. Fortunately we are not dependent on just what we grow, but use it as a supplement,at this point.
Gardening at home is developing the talent, the skill, the ability to provide for yourself if hardtimes should occur.
It is a sense of self-insurance, and self-assurance, if you will, to provide for your family and local community should hard times occur.
Question :What are "Hard Times" ?
ANSWER : Lay-off, downsizeing, uncontrollable inflation, recession, nationwide financial depression, personal bankruptcy, hurricanes, tornadoes, etc., etc..
With garderning skills, you have an asset ,..your skills, your ability to grow crops, and your mind - and no one can ever take that away from you !
GlowBull warming is a political taxation hoax !
It's hard to believe in Glow Bull warming as you go further South.
You can see where some vegetation stops (hard freeze line), and then other fern / palm vegeation occurs as you travel down the penninsula on US Route #1 in Florida .
Gardening is a learned skill and ability which is constantly growing , that is why I reccomend staying active with Co-Operative Extension (an excellent local resource).
Also , appreciate the weather and its impact on soil, and growing conditions.
Resoources are avialable only if you know where to look, and willing to take the time to look .
3 T squash and a Shmoo!
(Translation: Three Tromboncino and one Tennessee Sweet Potato squash.)
One of the T's was so much oranger than the others that I saved a few seeds separately. A few years ago I harvested a squash that was fluorescent orange and sweeter than sugar, but the seeds produced just the normal kind. I'm hoping to isolate the strain.
Moved the cold frame out of the workshop yesterday morning, and then spent the rest of the weekend working on the potting shed.
Mrs. Augie is going to paint a palm tree on the west end. She'll be able to sit on the front porch and see the beach. LOL
Nanner helped me move the cold frame out there.
And Mrs. Augie worked on dusting the inside. You wouldn't believe how dirty things get over a hundred years.
Congratulations to you!!!
In any event, I wanted to share something with y'all that I was just introduced to. I'm sure the more seasoned gardeners likely are aware of it, but the US Dept. of Agriculture has a program called the "National Plant Germplasm System" that offers "free" seeds/plants/roots to organizations and researchers across the Country. The caveat is that you must be conducting some type of research into the requested items. Sometimes the research requirements are strict (tobacco is one with very specific requirements). Other times, it can be quite general - "Will X plant grow in this region?".
I actually was able to order more hops seeds, along with actual sprouts, along with coffee beans, cotton seeds and more under the research goal of seeing if these types of crops will fare well in Western Colorado. Of course, at the end of the season, I'll need to submit a report of my findings, but it seems rather worth it to me personally to get access to the items available.
In any event, if you are interested, go to the website linked above, and punch in the name of the plant you want to grow. You'll get a list of results - click each one you want and add it to your request. When you're finished, complete the process to receive your order.
Fascinating program, if you ask me. Certainly something that a taxpaying, productive Member of society might want to look at doing. I'll keep y'all posted on my progress!

Jesus did tell us to be like children :)
The legislature passed a special bill so that they didn’t have to make up all of the time, and so that summer school could start on time.
The bill also required that the snow days experienced each year are to be built into the next year’s schedule.
Great, I’ll expect regular updates each week.LOL
Exactly. It lowers the grocery bill, and provides lots of practice and knowledge about what can be successfully grown where we live.
Good results. Hope the colorful one can be duplicated.
Thanks for sharing the pics. Looks like a good bit was accomplished.
Thanks for the info. Keep us posted.
LOL! You’ll also see the result of a swimming head! It will be a 6-hour day once a week.
Tough on the kister too!LOL
“Tough on the kister too!”
LOL! I was hoping not to think of that part of it! So I’ll be having swimming head and spreading hips! :-D I’ll be a mess!
Maybe I can straighten myself out by Friday afternoons to give a coherent report on the Master Gardener classes... or not! ;-)
Thanks for asking for the reports! I do have some other ongoing projects, so may not be able to do comprehensive ones. I will at least try to hit some of the high points and things I learn with a “Gee Whiz - that’s truly amazing!” factor.
Thank you Silentgypsy!
Counterintuitively, Darlin and I decided that in order to take the classes and be responsible for our other pressing projects, we actually will need to be stepping back from our gardening activities. We figure we’ll devote our allotted gardening time this year to learning about gardening, and not in the doing of it. There just isn’t enough time. I have told greeneyes that I will be trying to give reports here and there with at least the high points.
“Don’t grow up. I never really did...”
Johnny, that is a tremendous accomplishment, in my book!
Whatever you can do will be appreciated. I’m sure that someone will find the info helpful.
