(CNN)Way out beyond Mars, but before you get to Jupiter, is a planet.
You read that right. There's a planet between Mars and Jupiter.
You may not have heard of it, but it was discovered in 1801 -- 129 years before Pluto. It originally was called a planet, then later an asteroid and now it's called a dwarf plane
Its name is Ceres (pronounced like series) and you'll likely be hearing a lot more about it in the coming weeks.

So...Pluto (which has moons) gets demoted,
And Ceres (which doesn’t) gets promoted.
I think it is a plot by the greenies, as Pluto was the God of WEALTH (Capitalism), and Ceres was the Goddess of “Whole Grain Goodness”.

A huge dwarf? You’re not Ceres!
To: Ernest_at_the_Beach
It's not a planet it's an asteroid. It's a stupid game of semantics. Several years ago a bunch of activists got all their supporters together at the annual meeting of the IAU and waited until 2/3 of the membership had left on the last day of the meeting and then rewrote what this self appointed body considers to be a planet verses and asteroid.
Pluto was stripped of its status as a planet and called a "dwarf planet" and the asteroid Ceres along with a few other large solar system bodies out past Pluto were added to that category. Nothing in reality has changed. All that happened was a bunch of people using Alinsky tactics strong-armed their controversial views into "acceptability." The only reason the IAU has any authority to name objects and their features at all is because every who is interested in the topic long ago agreed to be bound by their opinions.

Well Eris is the Goddess of discord. She was also responsible for the Trojan War.

Not yet. You should read your own link.
Dawn is rapidly approaching Ceres and is due to arrive in orbit around the dwarf planet on March 6.

You are correct. Confused this with another probe that landed on an asteroid of a similar name. I repent in dust and ashes. Don’t tell anyone.

Good grief! Are CNN reporters, even their so-called science reporters, really this stupid? Ceres is well known by anyone that reads Isaac Asimov. “Luck Star and the Pirates of the Asteroids” was a great boys book I read when I was an 8th grader . . . circa 1964.

Ceres is actually a better target for colonization than Mars!
