The couple was driving their pit bull through a shopping center in Costa Mesa on their way to Huntington Beach when the dog turned on them.
Authorities said the couple both sustained serious injuries. Witnesses said both were bitten repeatedly in the arms.

The husband was driving, his wife was a passenger. They said the dog attacked inexplicably.

During the attack, the wife was able to call 911 while the husband pulled into a parking lot. The husband jumped out of the vehicle and the dog followed, continuing to attack the man.
Police said when the woman tried to coax the dog back into the car, the dog turned on her as well.

No, I don't think so.
But they are noting that we don't know all the facts. And some of us are pointing out that there are a lot of things that can set (any) dog off. That's why so many people are crappy dog owners, they don't try to learn what those things are for their dog. These people may have done nothing deliberately to set this dog off, so it wouldn't be their "fault" in that sense. But it's a pretty good bet that they knew a great deal less about their dog & dogs in general than a responsible dog owner should. I can safely say that because it applies to the majority of dog owners.
Maybe they did give him the last bite.....but it was from Burger King.....

I can explain it; it's a pit bull. See, now wasn't that simple?
Pit Bulls are sweet & cuddly.......until they turn on you.

What in the Sam Hill does this have to do with the story? Someone gets paid by the word? How about a couple in a car with a pit bull?
Since I used to live in Costa Mesa, I am REALLY interested in knowing what PART of Costa Mesa they were driving through! And since a long time FRiend lives in Huntington Beach, I need to know if they were going anywhere near her neighborhood so she can be on the alert...
Yes, there has to be more to this story. Either they were arguing, the car stopped suddenly so the dog was scared, a bee stung him or the radio was playing rap.
On the other hand, I have owned four Rottweilers over 35 years. They were powerful dogs but gentle in their demeanor. We never had any experience with them attacking or biting. Of course, we trained them and they took commands like they understood English. We kept all of them in a block fenced yard so they didn't get out. But I used to run daily with every one of them and never had any problems on the road with them except for other dogs growling or lunging at them. I kept them on a short leash to avoid confrontations.
I know these views are based on anecdotal evidence, but I think that pit bulls deserve the reputation they have but Rottweilers not so much.

My husband and I got loud with each other the other day about directions to a certain store. We retired here and are still somewhat unfamiliar with the area except MY sense of direction is much better than his. We were looking at a map of the area as the internet was down due to a storm.
The cat started howling and ended up under the kitchen table peering out at us....I was surprised at that reaction. I suppose if the cat had been a pit bull we would have gladly told the respective spouse, he/she was absolutely right and just left the house in search of the store.
My husband flew for years so his navigation skills were excellent in the air but on the ground, something else!! Well, I guess age plays a part also. In that case, glad he gave up flying!
