My daughter is in Chicago first time for business. She is impressed. Clean she says and very pretty. I was there years ago and it was a pretty much a non-event. The Loop...whoopee! Plus, isn't the place more deadly than Kabul? Keep in mind that I like small towns far away from any large city. Cities all seem the same and I probably feel this way because when I visit one I always ask myself "Could I live here?" and the answer is invariably "NO."

Downtown in the skyscraper districts during the daytime isn’t all that bad.

Lots of people working downtown live in the suburbs, which are safer at night.

With their debt loading, their future will make the current Detroit look like utopia.

Outwards migration from Chicago due to taxes, regulation. Not as bad as Detroit area but just give it time.

That’s true, with Illinois’ general problems it is a disaster waiting to happen. A good plan today is to be portable.

It isn’t unusual to read about a dozen drive by shootings or more over a single weekend. But they don’t happen in the big city because the typical targets aren’t living there but in residential areas.

It’s a dynamic and beautiful city.

I’d like to spend a day at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago but that’s it.

There is a reason Chicago is in Crook County.

A few years ago I stayed at a hotel near Wrigley Field. That area wasn’t bad. But it was summer. I wouldn’t want to be in Chicago during the winter.

Chicago’s economy is a lot more diversified than Detroit or Cleveland.

I work in the Sears Tower (well, it’s now known as Willis Tower but no one calls it that), but live 25 miles west in another county. I take the train to and from work.

The Loop in the daytime is okay. The west side of Chicago at any time of day is a war zone, as is much of the south side. The west side neighborhoods of Pilsen and Little Village are not even part of the United States, as they have been wholly annexed by Mexico, and the Mexican flag is prominently displayed throughout those areas.

Chicago anywhere is a dangerous place after dark. Situational awareness is critical. And Illinois now has CCW so at least the law-abiding citizens some sort of chance against the ferals, but the places one can carry in the city are restricted by the respective business owners. Out in the burbs, outside of Cook County, it is a hell of a lot safer, and CCW is quite common.

I am in real estate and have traveled all around Chicago for 19 years. Most visitors will probably stay downtown or in one of the residential neighborhoods adjacent to downtown. All these areas are very nice. Downtown Chicago has many residential towers full of young people. There is this vibrancy in the area that is attractive. Your daughter probably was affected by the ambiance and all the tall buildings. It is relatively safe in these areas too. All the gangland nonsense is typically found in the poor ghetto neighborhoods. The ones full of single mother homes and all the associated problems that go with that. Those areas look completely different and devoid of hope. Chicago’s slogan is that it is a City of Neighborhoods. It’s largely true from my personal experience.

Libs there just don’t like you fighting back against your attackers though. Tends to reduce their voter base.

“Chicago: A Great City?”
*********************************************

GREECE: A GREAT COUNTRY?

To both questions, the qualifier of “WHEN” needs to be added to give a correct answer. IMHO Chicago does not have a great financial or economic future.

No! Chicago like every big and small city gets a bad rap on crime - just make her stay away from inner cities. I doubt any woman would have any interest in them anyway. Chicago is pretty and the shopping looks great!

Yup. People seem to forget that cities have always been nests of depravity even in the biblical times.
