Carl Krawitt has watched his son, Rhett, now 6, fight leukemia for the past 4 1/2 years. For more than three of those years, Rhett has undergone round after round of chemotherapy. Last year he finished chemotherapy, and doctors say he is in remission.
Now, there's a new threat, one that the family should not have to worry about: measles.
Rhett cannot be vaccinated, because his immune system is still rebuilding. It may be months more before his body is healthy enough to get all his immunizations. Until then, he depends on everyone around him for protection what's known as herd immunity.

While I understand the father wanting to protect his son, if the other parents have the right not to vaccinate their children, his desires should not trump their rights.
That said, I think the parents who don’t vaccinate are MORONS, brainwashed by thoroughly debunked junk science.
Do we know if illegal children are immunized?
Ultimate success of a systematic immunization program requires knowledge of distribution of susceptibles by age and subgroup and maximal effort to reduce the concentration of susceptibles throughout the community rather than aiming to reach any specific proportion of the overall population.
So we allow non vaccinated illegals to gather in close localities .. little Libya, little mexico, little islamic states ... against the (apparently) common sense 1984 projections (and this treatise developed in 1983) and a guy that has a sick kid and is trying to DO something TO society, (rightly or wrongly perceived in motivation) is chastened by the alleged normal people here in FR.
WE slam Californicatia quite frequently and correctly (imo), but NOW we gang up on this guy because his son is sick and he asks only that America do what it always USED TO DO ???
Beam me up Mr Speaker, There's no longer intelligent life in America
The “susceptibles” were more homogenous back in the early 80s.
Even in that case, I don't agree with the parents. Perhaps they should get a homeschool waiver (or whatever the rules are where they live). They KNOW their child has a high risk of a negative outcome from the vaccine. Yet they want to force children who might have a negative outcome but aren't aware of it to have that same vaccine?
That's totally self-centered beyond compassion even in their situation. FWIW, if I had a child with the health challenges their child faces, I would not want him in a public school germ factory, whatever the vaccination situation.
They (we), (I) partly succeeded and got a few poitico's (Jerry Rubin) into Congress and the ball started to roll and become the base for the snowwman we face today with his snow jobs.
Dad, I assume is working to put food on the table, and there is no mention of a mom in the article I read. Perhaps he is a single parent. Homeschooling may not be an option for this family without knowing their situation.
How is this father's expectation that the kids attending school will have their vaccinations, like they should, trampling the rights of others? This guy just went through 4 years of watching his kid fight death and you think he is a narcissist craving attention? Maybe the guy and his wife need to work full time to pay the bills? I suppose they could home school their kid from their van down by the river.
You're the @sshole, not this dad who just survived 4 years of cancer treatment for his young son. Grab a brain.
Is this guy so he’ll bent on sending his six year old to a state institution. It makes me sick.
No, the “idiots” that don’t get their children vaccinated are exercising their right to not do so based on religious grounds or the fact they’ve researched vaccinations and don’t like what they’ve found out.
That doesn’t mean they are any less of an idiot.
In this country there is a right to be an idiot.

Concurring bump.
Whatever logic the school might apply to justify banning unvaccinated children would apply to his own son as well.
Not to seem insensitive or anything but if this kids immune system is this badly compromised then why would they send him to school in the first place. The child should be home-schooled until he is able to be immunized. I do agree that children who are not immunized should NOT be allowed to attend public schools. Every parent who has refused to immunize their children should be forced care for a child with measles or whooping cough or God forbid small pox. Why on earth would they put their children at risk for any one of these preventable horrible diseases?
I don’t believe children are vaccinated anymore against small pox.
There are way more children dying today.
Every heard of 55 million babies and abortion???
What about cancer, heart disease and diabetes sky rocketing over 7000% in the last 50 years???
What about the massive increase in Autism? How did that happen?
And you’re basing your claim they are idiots on what vaunted research? The same research that says global warming is a settled science? That’s idiotic.
His son cannot be vaccinated at this time because of chemo treatments.
Articles have been posted about parents opting out of vaccination requirements due to religious objections.
What about the massive increase in Autism? How did that happen?
There are tons of ways that can happen, to include broadening the diagnostic criteria to include kids who used to be, in street terms, a little off. Maternal nutrition during pregnancy, maternal illness during pregnancy. A variant of fetal alcohol syndrome.
Like I said, you don't want to vaccinate your kids or yourself, have at it. It's a great country we live in.
Since when do we need “vaunted research?” This is FR after all. And by the way, your are basing your position on what? Anecdotal observations?
