DENVER (CBS4) A nationwide cellphone company distributing phones and cellphone plans in Denver as part of a massive government program says it is outraged by the unacceptable actions uncovered by a CBS4 undercover investigation.
The response from Total Call Mobile comes nearly three months after an undercover CBS4 investigation revealed multiple examples of fraud and cheating in the phone distribution program.
The Lifeline program is aimed at providing free cellphone service to the poor and needy. It handed out more than 13 million free cellphone plans in the first six months of 2014. In Colorado, the program handed out more than 117,000 free cellphone plans in the first half of 2014 or about 20,000 cellphones every month.
If you own a cellphone, you pay for the free phones and their wireless plans via a monthly tax on your cellphone called the Universal Service Tax. Although the Lifeline wireless program has been around since 2005 and started under President George W. Bush, it ballooned under President Obama and the phones are often referred to as Obamaphones.

They’re shocked, shocked, I say!
It’s how he bought 2 elections. Other than Obamacare he did not pass any new massive programs. Just played fast and loose with the rules on all of the existing ones.
THAT should be a lesson to the RINOs as to WHY such programs should NOT EXIST!
Send in the Phone Cops.
Wow... someone who would take a “free” phone would use the program fraudulently? Really?
Knock me over with a feather.
Fraud in a gubbermint freebie program? Impossible!
Liberals truly believe that those who commit fraud in their feel good “help the poor” programs are a small percentage,
when in reality, fraud is the MAJORITY of the cost of those programs.
Isn’t ‘fraud’ and ‘Obama phones’ synonymous? Look up fraud in the dictionary - see pic of Obama.
I notice they did not say they were surprised...
GREAT comment at the CBS site...
“So racist whites now want me to recharge my Obama-phone when it run down instead of just throwing it away and getting a new one?”
Fraud! Abuse! In a government program?
Surely, they jest.
[/s]
The government excuse will be that it would cost more to clean up the fraud and abuse than the losses from the fraud and abuse. Government in action.
Are the phones being used for drug dealing operations? If so, Im shocked! shocked I tell you!
Surprised? 0 had ads telling his people to get an 0bamaphone.
Now we know where our money has been going. What a complete fraud the “universal service fund” has been.
If you own a cellphone, you pay for the free phones and their wireless plans via a monthly tax on your cellphone called the Universal Service Tax.
We own a couple of pay-as-you go TracFones and we still get charged the fee everytime we buy an airtime card.
We've also learned that the only time you really need a cellphone is when traveling or in the event of a roadside emergency. So the normal situation with my TracFone is to charge it up weekly and put it in the car 'just in case.' Four airtime cards per year = one month's typical cell phone bill . . . and plenty of minutes to use when really needed (traveling) because we use them so rarely the rest of the time.
But it still steams me that we are forced to subsidize the jag-offs using ObamaPhones to make drug deals.
I must have missed the constitutional amendment that affirmed the right of every citizen to have a cell phone. Silly me, I thought those belonged to the people who were willing to PAY for them!
They may be “outraged” but they cannot be surprised.
Really? A lady of color told us she had three O phones. One for texting, one for games, and one for talking.
I was not surprised.
I must have missed the constitutional amendment that affirmed the right of every citizen to have a cell phone. It's right there in the Demoncrats favorite section, the "Gibs-Me-Dat / What's-Yours-Is-Mine" clause.
