CNN) - It looks like something out of "Alien," but has more in common with "Jurassic Park."

It's a rare frilled shark that has been caught by a fisherman in Australia, where no one remembers ever seeing one caught before.

With a mouth packed full of needle-like teeth and a body like an eel, the six-foot long frilled shark is sometimes described as a fish "fossil" that dates back 80 million years.

there is a Netflix documovie about him on - I watched it the other night - there were parts that were amusing, and there were parts that were exemplary of how intolerant gays are. Funny guy on some levels - stereotypical aspects on other levels.

I most surprised to hear he spent a good deal of time in Japanese internment camps during WW2....in fact, he said they were taken to a higher security camp when his parents (stripped of everything) were asked to pledge allegiance, despite the fact their life was destroyed by Roosevelts (D) un Constitutional actions

I’m better with a shotgun or .22 than I am with a harpoon! :)

“Tide Pools and snorkeling are my absolute limit.”

Beware the tide pools!

While snorkeling in a tide pool in Okinawa in the late 60’s I encountered a large aggressive & deadly Sea Snake. I made a hasty retreat and gave my equipment to one of my friends.

Haven’t found any reason to enter the ocean since.

Hey, change the name to Australian Roughy or
New Zealand Sea Bass and you have got PRODUCT!

Have to use wire leaders though...Probably
electric reels too.

Not specifically but yes there are many types of sharks that are land based.

The Harpoons I used to play with had a 60+ nautical mile range.

I was one of the first officers to run through the HITTS (Harpoon Interactive Tactical Training System) and earn the patch. I still have it in my dresser drawer.

I find that hard to fathom.

(very subtle : ) )

Well, they say Sharks haven't 'evolved' for millions(tens/hundreds/ of?) years. Which isn't really true, but is as true as the idea this fish hasn't evolved.

I imagine it used to grow much larger. As far as 'adaptive pressure', the pressure only comes if something threatens the viability of a species. What would these things have to fear at that depth ?

For what it’s worth, the list of sharks whose viability is threatened is somewhat long:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_threatened_sharks

As far as I know, they don’t evolve, no matter how threatened they may be. Weird.

I read something yesterday about this that said it was caught about 200 feet down.

I had guessed that they must have caught it either by line or by net at a much shallower depth. I just couldn't resist remarking on the idea that they caught it at 4000' with a fishing reel and line.

They’re not sure why it was so shallow.

I suppose we will never know.

Maybe it was in the middle of evolving?

Everything is in the middle of evolving.

The ONLY thing I’m remotely unnerved by on land are grasshoppers.
