HAYDEN, IdahoEmployees evacuated the Hayden Walmart on Tuesday following a shooting inside the store.
Authorities on the scene around 11:15 a.m. described the shooting as "accidental."
A woman was shopping with four kids, when one of the kids reached into her purse and accidentally discharged the weapon, according to Kootenai County Sheriff's Deputies at the scene.
The gunshot killed the 29-year-old woman. Deputies on scene said the child who accidentally fired the handgun was about 2-years-old.
Deputies said the woman and children were in the back of the store near the electronics area when it happened. Deputies said the woman was in town for holidays and is not from the area.
Video surveillance in the store, along with eye witness testimony helped deputies determine that this was an accident.
Authorities said the woman did have a concealed weapons permit.
The store is currently closed.

I was just thinking, of all the crap that is in a purse, why would you have the safety off?
Only takes a quick rack to make it Condition 4.

Assuming you always have the use of both hands. Better option: Check out a Saf-T-Blok for Glocks and ignore the ‘Boy Scout’ on You Tube or find and view his ultimate commentary.

Their Clip Draw for the Glock has obvious merit.....
Can you read. I'll try again. A woman carrying a semi-auto off body who needs to round up her kids, thumb the safety and rack the slide when an attacker has the initiative might as well carry a leaded club. What's fun and games have to do with anything. You may disagree with me but why be terminally dense about it.
I have a Glock and a Makarov w/safety. I find I can rack the Glock in about same amount of time as it takes to unlock the safety on the Mack. Plus sound effects can sometimes be a deterrent.
The above for all of the “Glockaphobe” on this thread.
And Zimmermanns gun was DA only
Yes, alive only because he was carrying with a round in the chamber.
Zimmerman's gun a KelTec PF9- Yes, DA only but with a 5lb trigger pull, no manual safety. Trigger pull about the same as a Glock.
She needed a MIC holster to cover the trigger. http://www.themicholster.com
George Zimmerman would probably disagree. No, he wasn't carrying a Glock. He had a KelTec PF9- no manual safety, DA only, trigger pull 5 lbs and a live round in the chamber.
In the end all that matters is for you to carry what you are comfortable and confident with. I transitioned from carrying a revolver to carrying a Glock. I have a good custom holster and I always keep my finger off the trigger until ready to shoot. The most important safety is the one between our ears.
Yea, and when the women gets home and puts her purse on the counter .... Just like leaving a loaded gun out.
Your answer is bogus dude/ette. No reason to be carrying a pistol in a purse with a round chambered and no safety. I assume it was a semi-automatic without a safety. Yea, if she was carrying on her person that’s a different story, though I could still make an argument that it’s still necessary to have a round chamber.
In her purse, she is not in direct control of the gun. When you’re not in direct control of the gun, don’t keep a round in the chamber. That’s just as culpable as laying it on the counter loaded and chambered.
It’s common sense to all but those that live in a modern day fantasy western.
Safety is 99% awareness. Both in carrying and in conducting yourself while traveling to and from your car.
Agreed.
Bottom line, never carry a Glock in anything that wasn’t designed specifically for a Glock pistol. Glock designed and marketed holsters completely enclose and protect the trigger and the trigger can’t be pulled as long as it’s in the holster, so the holster is, in effect, the only safety the pistol has. The pistol can’t be fired as long as it’s in its holster, so removing it from the holster is taking it off safety and returning it to its holster is putting it back on safe.
I’ve been carrying Glocks now for over 24 years and I’m comfortable carrying one, but I don’t like being around others who do. I’ve just seen too many accidental discharges with Glocks by people who really don’t know how to safely carry them.
not all guns have safeties. and some people believe if they are out in public if they have to pull their gun out they don’t want the safety on.
and in certain parts of town i can see where i’d not want the safety on.
I usually carry a .38 snubby, but I also have a Glock. The .38 is for when I don't expect trouble. The Glock is for when I expect to be in a bad area after dark.
Spot on. The properly-designed holster is the Glock's safety. DO NOT carry a Glock without a properly designed holster.
Yes, you are correct on all counts. I’ve never seen a CC purse so I don’t know how a gun is secured in it. It’s a shame this woman did not recognize the danger of her grabby baby getting into her purse.
This is fairly well known today, but back in 1989 when I was first issued a Glock 17 and required to carry it, none of us had a good understanding of how unsafe that pistol is.
We learned the hard way.
my speculation is that they said the child was two years old - this may have been the first time the kid was able to do such a thing. mom may have ever even thought it could appen b/c the kid was too young to do such a thing, before.
The Seattle Times article on the shooting closed with a completely unnecessary sentence about how the shooting took place in a politically conservative town. That was the dog whistle for the leftist Seattleites to pollute the comments section with gloating and glee.
Idaho is an open carry state, concealed carry w. permit (I believe), but that means concealed on one’s person. Sadly, the owner of this piece was guilty of terminal carelessness.
That’s good that your friend’s child doesn’t remember.
Hopefully this child won’t remember what happened, either. Unfortunately, the woman’s other children were there, too, though.
Whatever happens, all of this woman’s children are going to need lots of prayer. Such a shame.
