Nasa's Orbiting Carbon Observatory (OCO-2) has returned its first global maps of the greenhouse gas CO2.
The satellite was sent up in July to help pinpoint the key locations on the Earth's surface where carbon dioxide is being emitted and absorbed.
This should help scientists better understand how human activities are influencing the climate.
The new maps contain only a few weeks of data in October and November, but demonstrate the promise of the mission.
Clearly evident within the charts is the banding effect that describes how emitted gases are mixed by winds along latitudes rather than across them.
Also apparent are the higher concentrations over South America and southern Africa. These are likely the result of biomass burning in these regions.
It is possible to see spikes, too, on the eastern seaboard of the US and over China. These probably include the additional emissions of CO2 that come from industrialisation

Even with this snapshot, scientists can see that some of their existing models will have to be revised.

The Orbiting Carbon Observatory has been spoken of as the forerunner of satellite missions that would seek to gain the information needed to patrol climate treaties, by helping to check that promises made by nations on carbon curbs were being kept.

Not where you thought it would be then? I'm shocked....
What is really telling to me is the look of North America, particularly the US. On a better resolution map, one could probably overlay the CO2 concentrations along with the concentration of Democrats/Blue State, City, Counties and see a very high correlation.
Coal mine fires in China create more CO2 in a year than all cars and trucks in America. And no way to stop a coal fire. And they are piss poor about not preventing new ones.
Yeah I thought “the science is settled!”
I believe it. Also there is a very hot blob up in the north mid atlantic - seems to be right over Iceland....volcanos....
Are they trying to say that CO2 is a gas that is static? It doesn’t blend with the atmosphere and move with win current?
No,No, No, miss-quoted, what they actually said was.... Lol.
CO2, Bruté?
Probably the reason they want to revise their models...it didn't fit 'their' version of Biology.
“And no way to stop a coal fire”
If you want to stop a coal fire just throw it in my coal stove . It won’t stand a chance. :)
Whoever controls the Carbon dioxide data, controls Earth.
I love that Texas is “greener” than California.
OK!! Everybody pay attention!
Lesson for today:
1. The sun is 1,300,000 times as big as the earth.
2. The sun is a ball of fire that controls the climates of all its planets.
3. The earth is one of the suns planets.
4. The earth is a speck in comparison to the size of the sun.
5. Inhabitants of the earth are less than specks.
Study Question: How do less-than-specks in congress plan to control the sun?
Interesting that there are large hot spots in jungles and undeveloped areas, even a couple large ones in the ocean. No doubt straight white males will be blamed for them somehow.
Yes, that is an unexpected surprise.
Seriously, though - to me whatever the effect of C02 actually is, I think the “science” of it was muffled long ago and lashed to political maneuvering tied to funding that supports it.
On whole, things like volcanos (especially eruptions) are outright ignored or explained away with the brush of a Gore’s “Excelsior!”......Other aspects of large concentrations of vegetation and year-round heat, massive use of fires in third world and underdeveloped supercountries are totally subsumed by liberals arguments that the United States is somehow the only culprit for these wild climate predictions they concoct.
It is all about power. It is about control, whether socialist, communist or fascist. They’ve tried all manner of means to exact it - and now they have settled on the environment and climate. Until they find another issue to champion (when they are eventually ignored on climate).
We are already seeing test trials for the new ooga booga: Sugared drinks, fat content in foods, good calories/bad calories (we’ll need a good touch/bad touch menu for that I’m guessing).
It is just idiotic in my opinion. None of their claims are substantiated by actuality.
South America,Central Africa,SE Asia: Could be jungle being cleared.
China: That would be the industrial output that is conspicuously absent from the US and Europe.
Considering the easterly flow of the wind, this could simply be a build up of all the Co2 that was blown across the country....
If I'm reading it correctly, almost all of the hottest spots don't coincide with any populations of humans except maybe over there in China. Is that Greenland or Iceland cut off at the top of the map? I thought they were so green there, guess this doesn't account for volcanic activity. I'd love to know how they know which CO2 molecules were generated by human activity and which were naturally produced. All this proves is the government is too big and stop interfering with science.
Notice that it’s in parts per million. The red is only about 18 ppm higher than the yellow. I’m no scientist but this seems like a very tiny difference..
