Atticus Finch is a monster. Sure, he’s one of history’s most beloved literary characters (he was even played by Gregory Peck in a film adaptation) but he’s also, to use the parlance of our time, history’s greatest rape apologist.
Glenn Reynolds, a law professor at the University of Tennessee and pundit, first observed Finch’s new standing in the world on Twitter in early December:

I must admit that it never occurred to me that this comment was meant as a sendup of "rape crisis advocates"...the ones that insist that *every* rape accusation is valid,truthful and demanding of serious punishment.

Humans form far more complex societies than animals do. When Homo sapiens assumed a fully upright stance, the changes in the female's reproductive anatomy (narrowing of the pelvis, etc) plus the relatively large head of the 9-month fetus combined to set up the delivery of the offspring at an extremely immature stage. (A calf can walk on its own 30 minutes after it's born: a human can take a year or more. At 30 minutes the human can't even lift its head.)
This means every parturient female needs a social structure: not only her mate but her sister, mother, brother, whoever --- and even in primitive societies often more elaborate than that.
The vulnerability of the mother/child dyad is the source of marriage and family, which are manifested in every human culture because of decisive evolutionary selection pressure: those who didn't, didn't survive. And marriage and family --- with all the restrictions on sexual coitus that that implies --- are the source of all further elaborations on human society: the source of kinship, clan, culture and civilization.
If you don't have that, you might as well be bonobos. Brothers.

Of course marriage is the best reproductive strategy for humans. I just think it is funny that what feminists make out to be the greatest misfortune that could befall a woman is actually the normal routine for most animals on the planet.
The leftists are always telling us we should “get back to nature”, but they don’t like it so much when they get an actual taste of what nature is like.
I don't buy into the grand evolutionary myth in the first place for factual reasons, but also in no small part because it is void of any metaphysical foundation for what one ought to do or ought not to do.

In the story, I thought Tom Robinson was innocent of the crime he was accused of. How then could his lawyer be an “apologist” for rape?
Because the white girl was crying rape so Finch was claiming the girl was a liar. Therefore according to the Jezebel Feminists Finch by not believing the girl is an “apologist” for rape.
OK, so it’s part of the feminist “womyn-never-lie-about-rape” doctrine.
The article is satirical and sarcastic to point out the ridiculousness of the “rape apologist” labels.
Been seeing this particular concept (Atticus Finch as “rape apologist”) floating around conservatives and libertarians on Twitter for about a week as a means to mock the social justice warriors.

Try not to get so upset. No doubt that humans have evolved with the hard wiring in their brains that results in a strong emotional commitment to the care and well being of their helpless dependent newborn offspring. Otherwise the species however complex would have gone extinct. Historically rape and the procreative reality of rape has been well documented. The massive and systemic rapes of Genghis Khan and his hordes have been historically and genetically verified. The recorded histories of Europe are replete with the rapes of vulnerable women by kings, dukes, nobles, public officials, soldiers,slave owners, wealthy individuals the “rights of the signors”. Those are just the recorded histories. The story in Africa and the Mideast if you care to look is much the same today. Believe me, am all in favor of social advances and the veneer of civilization however thin but feminism is faced with stubborn facts and biological hard wired imperatives to procreate. Foolish to assume that you can negate or legislate fully the hormonal response of a biologically intact male when he is confronted with a woman he deems capable of child bearing. Biology rules in the end. However it is a noble endeavor of civilization to protect vulnerable women but unfortunately evolutionary realities that motivate human behavior are not politically correct or even nice.

Yes but according to the Jezebel Feminists being spoofed in the article Atticus should not even be allowed to cross-examine the accuser. We should just believe she was raped end of story.
My initial reaction began with the words : "Shut your ..." and ended up on a very rude note.
My more considered response: I deal in fact. You interpret this as mere "upsetness," but this only shows your lack of adequate comprehension.
The discussion shows an overall obliviousness to the distinction between "Men commit rape aplenty," and "Rape is connatural to man."
The argument has been made on this thread that rape makes a positive contribution to human reproductive fitness. This is rubbish, because it works against the formation of stable interpersonal social bonds, which IS a requirement of human reproductive fitness.
Indeed. Mayella’s bruises were from somebody who led with his left and her father is left handed. Additionally, she had strangulation marks all around her neck. Tom Robinson’s left arm was shriveled and dead due to a cotton gin accident in his youth; therefore, he physically could not have caused to marks. In his testimony, Robinson states that Mayella tried to kiss him and he rejected her and that’s when her dad walked in. Bob Ewell beat his daughter for kissing a black man. Robinson testified that Mayella wanted to kiss a man and told him “what her pa do to her don’t count.” Since Ewell is an abusive, perpetually unemployed drunk whose kids’ only meals are those “gleaned” from the town dump beside which they reside, I’ve always interpreted this as Ewell has raped his daughter.
