Having a debate with anti-gun coworker. If someone breaks in your house and they see your face... Do you let them steal everything and assume they won't hurt you.
I claim once they see your face, that you are more likely to be hurt/killed by them and should do self-defense.
“Smile and wait for flash”
I would be equally concerned either way. Those who plan enough to conceal their faces, wearing ski masks for example, are probably very worried about being caught, which suggests they would be willing to get violent to avoid leaving witnesses.
Those who don’t think ahead and realize during a felony that they could be identified might panic and get violent. The act of entering an occupied home is an inherently violent act, and as far as I’m concerned the illegal entry is enough to morally justify self-defense. As far as the legal justification, that depends on where you live.
Ditto!
Its your basic point and click interface.
I would not trust most statistics in this area. Everyone has an agenda, and most statistics you see are just liars doing what liars do.
And, in any case, the statistic you are most likely to see is "Dead Burglar vs. Dead Homeowner". That is not a good metric to use, since they are both negative outcomes (the latter much worse than the former, obviously). A better statistic would be "Burglar Fleeing or Stopped vs. Dead Homeowner", but that is one you do not often see. An even better metric would be "Burglar deterred vs. Dead Homeowner", but that is unknowable.
Umm, no.
Don’t know about city dwellers, I have never lived in a city, but it is a good bet nearly every home in rural America has at least one firearm, and the homeowner is more than willing to demonstrate its use to uninvited guests.
And then place one in his cold, dead hand in order to reinforce my testimony to the local constabulary. If they can understand it through my gasping, sobs and crocodile tears.
I keep a couple of nasty looking knives stashed for just such a purpose.
I would guess most home invasions are done by very desperate people...people desperate for money or for drugs. Desperate people aren’t rational. They’ve chosen to violate someone else’s privacy and dwelling and they’ve determined they’re going to steal from them. The only way to be safe in that situation is not to be home. If you’re home the odds that something bad is going to happen to you seem very good unless the intruder is a master thief.
Has anyone heard of the Mozambique drill?
The first face they would see here would be my Rottweiler’s.He can be very unpleasant at times.
Anyone who comes into my home while me or my family are there has made a conscious decision to cross the rubicon between life and death.
Instead of choosing a time when none are home, they have specifically chosen a time when we are home, therefore placing our lives at risk...
Any and all means for defending my family will be employed.
If they break into my house, they are there for no good reason. I am not waiting to find out what the reason is.
Really it’s a pure matter of game theory. If they’ve seen your face then you’ve seen their face, which dramatically increases your ability to send them to jail, which means it’s in their best interest to kill you, which of course puts it in your best interest to shoot first.
Does not matter if they see my face or not, because it will be the last face they see.
I think the proper Vanderbilt society rules are that you announce your presence and warmly warn your visitor that you are presently armed and to extend your weapon with your pinkie finger raised, being careful always to discharge your weapon from the left and remove the carcass from the right.
According to many security protection systems, all the burglars are white, if by some by highly unlikely chance a black guy breaks in, you better be armed and ready.
Bad idea to post hypothetical responses here.
Interesting that FR would be used as a sounding board for this kind of question. “What would you do if” is a standard counter-intel prize piece of info.
They ain’t gonna be looking at my face. They will be too busy looking at my 12 gauge.
