Having a debate with anti-gun coworker. If someone breaks in your house and they see your face... Do you let them steal everything and assume they won't hurt you.
I claim once they see your face, that you are more likely to be hurt/killed by them and should do self-defense.
I would sit down and play some cards with the nice fella.
If they do that here, they’re dead.
Anyone have statistics?
Ask him what you should do if they see your azz.
If it happened in my home, all the surviving witnesses would agree that the invader convincingly threatened my life.
If I see their face, they have assumed room temperature and have absorbed a 3 inch round of 12 gauge buck shot.
It depends. How’s the face look?
On what? If a person breaks into a home here in Texas, they’ve usually signed their own death certificate. Where do you live?
If they’re in my house they have crossed the line that allows me to shoot them by a long way.
They better get a good look at my face because its the last one they’ll ever see.
It would be a tough choice. .45 or .357 magnum? I hate making snap decisions like that.
If they get a good clear look at my face then clearly I need more range time.
Burglary is an inherently violent crime. I catch someone in my place, I’m not even checking if they’re armed. I’ll search his body for weapons after the threat has been stopped.
Shoot.
Shovel.
Shut up.
Isn’t the issue “when you see their face?”
It is never about seeing your face. Just your mere presence can cause a confrontation. Don’t overthink a predators mindset; they will take you down to their level and beat you with experience.
It’s not about statistics. If somebody breaks into your house and kills you or doesn’t kill you, that is only a sample size of one, which is statistically insignificant. When somebody is in your house, it is not a survey of crime rates in the area and predicted rates of such-and-such an outcome. It is you and the burglar.
Assess the threat and react appropriately. Hopefully you have made provisions that give you some options other than “cover up and hope the bad man doesn’t hurt me”.
Given that this person has already broken into your house and does not seem to be particularly concerned whether you are there are not, there should be a strong presumption that he is dangerous, and probably armed. Given that, your analysis should skew heavily in the direction of “Center Mass”. So unless it is obviously harmless, like a drunken neighbor or stupid kids, you are probably in grave danger, and should react appropriately.
After they are dead on the floor I would still be angry because of their damn blood all over the place.
Once you see THEIR face, they will definitely be more likely to kill you.
I suppose it is possible that some criminals might get a kick out of seeing any fear on your face and would escalate the encounter to create more fear to the point of actually killing you. I think most criminals though just want the goods and then to get out asap. They don’t care what you look like.
