I was in Army AIT training at Ft. Sill, OK in 1976 in the field artillery. Marines were also there for field artillery training in the barracks next door.

That Marine DI put those poor marines thru hell; outside footlocker inspections at 0200, etc.

We had it relatively better as most of us had our mosquito wings by then and the Marine or Army DI's didn't mess with us...

Physically, Marine boot camp was not bad. Training was not bad either.

But what I did not expect was all the physiological B.S. That is what almost pushed me over the edge.

BTW, two things I learned in Marine Basic Training were how to hold my bladder and how to hold my bowels .

October 1968. The month and year that I realized that I’d really stepped in it when I arrived at Great Lakes boot camp. Learned real quick to do as I was told. Mostly worked but still got yelled at from time to time. Navy instructors could yell as loud as any Army or Marine instructor. Boot camp and basic training is designed to convert a civilian mindset to a military mindset in a very short order. That mostly worked for my four years in the Navy. I eagerly walked away after my enlistment was up.

Heh..... Civilians. If you had the cajones to attempt boot camp, you would eventually understand it.

Psychological, but yes, that's exactly it. The physical, you can transcend. The mind games, or as we used to say: the f*ck f*ck, can work on you.

I was hustled out with my platoon to formation (in our underwear) during such an hour, before they took us back in, one by one, and tipped our wall lockers to shake the contents onto the floor (looking for contraband like chewing gum or whatever). Drill sergeants for combat engineers (combat type--not construction) at Ft. Lost in the Woods were as mean as any and probably still are. It was 13 weeks of total control fun (no passes except for one after the first eight weeks). In the end, we actually enjoyed pushups, grass drills and high crawling around, barking like dogs.

I am lucky... I was not forced to join the military. I was asked to, but I declined... and I am probably better off for it.

If you(general usage of you) can’t handle someone yelling at you and trying to make you lose it in a somewhat safe environment, you’re probably not going to do well when people who hate you are trying to kill you in the middle of a battlefield.

Folks don’t realize, the abuse is meant to mentally prepare you for folks trying to kill you.
