Does Richard III's DNA question the Queen's right to the throne? Analysis reveals relative of

He was one of the nation’s most notorious monarchs in life, and Richard III is still creating controversy more than 500 years after his death. Genetic analysis of a skeleton discovered beneath a car park in Leicester three years ago has confirmed it did indeed belong to the last Plantagenet king. Much more intriguingly, it held a secret that could shake the foundations of the Tudor dynasty. The genetic discovery even raises a question mark over the current Queen’s royal heritage. DNA analysis revealed that one of Richard III’s male relatives was cuckolded - leading to his wife giving birth to another man’s child. Depending on just who was unfaithful, it could have far-reaching consequences.

The current line is Hanoverian (George I) mixed with Saxe Coburg (Albert) and Danish (Phillip). There is no Tudor or Plantagenet blood lines there

From what I understand the justification for placing the Hanoverians on the throne were their descendents through Tudors; Margaret Tudor to James V of Scotland to Mary Queen of Scots to James I of England to Elizabeth Stuart to Sophia of Hanover to George I and so on.

Current British royal family is entirely German, from House of Hanover and Battenberg. No relation to House of York or Lancaster.

Darling: [desperate] Ah! No, no, no, wait! No, look, I'm English! I was born in Croydon! [breathing heavily] I was educated at Ipplethorpe Primary School! I've got a girlfriend called Doris! I know the words to all three verses of "God Save the King!"

Blackadder: Four verses!

Darling: Four verses! Four verses! I meant four verses! Look, I'm as British as Queen Victoria!

Blackadder: So your father's German, you're half-German and you married a German?!

For that matter Henry VII did not become King because he was descended from John of Gaunt; he became King because he defeated the previous King in battle.

Still, the issue of their legitimacy was a touchy subject for the Tudors. Henry VII put to death Edward Plantagenet, the Earl of Warwick, extinguishing the male Plantagenet line. Henry VIII executed Margaret Pole, Countess of Salisbury, another Plantagenet.

It is an interesting fact however, that could lead to plenty of speculation as to who the cuckold was back in the chain of descent.

I figured - went and looked up some details, and John was born in Ghent. Nobody cared about spelling then, anyway.

I love history as you seem to.
History fun...
One man was at the death bed of 3 out of 4 assassinated U.S. Presidents. Who was he?

Yes, Owen Tudor and Queen Catherine were a very touchy subject.

There were books about this period in the children's section, either in the library in my junior high school, or in the public library when I was that age, 12 to 14. Well-researched stuff, with a real sense of the cold and misery. I wish I remembered more, titles or authors.

I do love history, indiscriminately. No matter what subject you begin to explore, you find interesting people in situations I’d like to avoid.

Robert Todd Lincoln...a kid at his dad’s deathbed, in the RR station when Garfield was shot, a member of McKinley’s cabinet and attendant.

Whoa, bad juju!

Brian Keith played President McKinley in “The Rough Riders” tv-movie, and killed himself as the production was wrapping up.

Sophia of Hanover was Queen Anne's closest living Protestant relative, but she died shortly before Anne so her son George became king when Anne died. The Hanoverians trace back through the Stuarts and Tudors to William the Bastard.

Genealogically speaking, the House of Wittelsbach has a better claim on the throne than the House of Windsor.

She’d been a widow for a while. That aside, maybe she liked him. Royal women didn’t get much opportunity to find a husband they liked.

I remember something about the nobles blocking a match with an aristocrat, so maybe Catherine said to heck with them, I’ll just marry for love.

Probably. She was a pawn in a very complex game. Deciding to blow off the whole thing (or close your eyes and roll the dice) has a lot of win percentage, if there are no obvious good choices.

For comparison, we could look at Henry VIII’s surviving wives, Anne of Cleves and Katherine Parr. Anne was divorced and settled with a pension and a comfortable place at court as “the King’s beloved Sister.” Katherine, his widow, married again but died giving birth.

Anne of Cleves was a smart cookie. She figured out how to play Henry and as a result lived a comfortable and peaceful life.
