From what I understand the justification for placing the Hanoverians on the throne were their descendents through Tudors; Margaret Tudor to James V of Scotland to Mary Queen of Scots to James I of England to Elizabeth Stuart to Sophia of Hanover to George I and so on.

Sophia of Hanover was Queen Anne's closest living Protestant relative, but she died shortly before Anne so her son George became king when Anne died. The Hanoverians trace back through the Stuarts and Tudors to William the Bastard.

Genealogically speaking, the House of Wittelsbach has a better claim on the throne than the House of Windsor.
