Would the elimination of fighting make hockey a safer sport?
The answer is no, at least according to experts polled in a recent survey conducted by The Hockey News.
The magazine asked 24 NHL executives, scouts, agents and coaches numerous questions regarding fisticuffs, the most contentious issue in hockey. The insiders, as a group, expressed some concern over its declining prevalence.
Fifty-eight percent of those surveyed said hockey would be less safe if fighting was eradicated, while 29% feel it wouldnt change much in the way of safety and 13% believe it would boost safety levels.

true dat, homey.
I was watching the fights one Friday night and a hockey game broke out.
Some friends of mine went to a Penguins fight and a hockey game broke out.
I can’t resist. Resist I much.
But that would turn a hockey game into a boxing match. (just kidding) lol
Beat me by 18 seconds, you yahoo!
"THIS IS HOCKEY!"
I used to hate hockey and always hated the fighting.
Now I love hockey and understand the need for fights on occasion.
Hockey is the last non PC sport we have left. I’m sure everything wrong in this Country/World will do everything they can to infiltrate and destroy this great sport.
now days its guys with slicked back or perfect gelled hair and nice suits.
More concerned with the stick or puck than a punch
Not so sure. In Russia they play very competitively but the retarded fighting we see is considered third world BS.
For a long time fighting allowed hockey to be the ultimate self policing sport. If somebody cheap shot your star player you beat him up, kept things clean. Then came the Broad Street Bullies beating their way to consecutive Cups and the tone of fighting changed, things got silly. Then came the instigator rule, and things are over corrected in the other direction, no longer do you beat up the cheap shot artist, because he won’t drop the gloves and you’ll get ejected, so now enforcers only fight enforcers and fighting doesn’t really work anymore (like beaning the batter in the AL). They are still exciting, and can energize the crowd and the team, but the self policing aspect is dead.
Did they ask the real experts? : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ms68m8ZP528
I would refer people to Ecclesiastes, chapter 3.
Fighting actually protects he games stars. It gives them room to operate. Teams got rid of their goons in the last purge. Why carry them if you can carry 3-4 tough players who can score, fore check and fight if need be? You still find a goon here or there. But that goon is more than just a goon.
Fighting in hockey allows the issues to be settled on the ice, rather than the street. As long as there is no attempt to permanently harm somebody, that’s where it should stay.
Fighting is the threat of what will happen if liberties are taken on another team’s best players
If you ban fighting, then ban checking, because it will be open season on guys like Sydney Crosby.
