It happened on Thursday night. I went out to my car. I climbed inside. I turned the key in the ignition. And

What a whiner.
The light is to alert you of a minor problem with the engine or related systems. Worst case, you’re losing some gas mileage and/or not passing inspection because of some gubmint emission sensor. It is VERY unlikely your car will stop over a code with no other evidence of trouble. The temp and oil pressure gages are far more important.
If it’s a serious issue, you WILL know it immediately.
And the tire pressure sensor is just there for convenience to identify a slow leak. If you don’t like it, pull the bulb and check your tires manually every week like back in the good ole days.
> Why, instead of check engine, they cant put a text message about the problem up, I dont know.
Product liability. Any possible message is open to interpretation by a “reasonable” person as opposed to a “trained” technician with a $20 chinese made code reader.
Why the Brits drink warm beer: Lucas refrigerators.
Of course, anyone can use an OBD II scanner to pull the error codes to determine the reason why the check engine light illuminated, but then that would defeat the purpose behind writing such a dumb article.
“It is more a range rover thing as opposed to an engine light thing”
If you’ve read enough of Doug’s posts on Jalopnik, you’ll eventually find out why an extended warranty from Carmax has gone up significantly in price. It’s because Doug bought his RR there and purchased the extended warranty.
And if you’ve read enough of Doug’s Jalopnik articles, you’ll also know that he made a wise move buying that warranty!
At least in this article he wasn’t talking about his Ferrari...
Any idea how to defeat the “ABS light” on a Blazer?
It’s a known glitch but beyond warranty/recall repair.
They don’t even have new parts available to replace or repair the old ones.
Can’t sell the damn thing because of that light and it’s in otherwise pristine condition.
Well, if you wasted your money on a Range Rover, you ARE an idiot...
(duck and run)
Have it display on the radio.
“There is a device that you can borrow from a car part place. (like Auto Zone or Checkers), that you can plug in and find out what the problem is. Unless you live in California. In California you have to pay a mechanic to do it. Another reason why I dont live in that state anymore.”
And that is why I now own a scan tool. Only trouble is, with the particular OBDII vehicle I have (’02 Mercedes E-class) it doesn’t do the manufacturer-specific codes.
Really? Can you point me to the California statute that outlaws mere mortals owning or using an OBD II scanner or that you have to pay a mechanic to use their OBD II scanner?
Is PepBoys, Autozone or O'Reilly's dealing in contraband by selling these scanners?
Hey Doug...buy a CarMD diagnostic code reader and relax will ya?
Did you know Lucas used to make a vacuum cleaner? It was their only product that didn’t suck.
Lucky.
Just get under the hood, remove one of the terminals on your battery and reinstall it. If the check engine still comes back on, take it to auto supply place and have them run a check for problems.
This guy’s got an idea:

I would not purchase any British made product except a Rolls Royce. I helped a friend adjust the clutch on his Jaguar once. It took all day.
On another point. My 2012 Toyota Tacoma has a MAINTENENCE REQUIRED light that comes on when it is due for an oil change. I told the dealer to turn it off and make sure it never comes on again. They send they can only reset it. I think they were fibbing.
I had a 2000 Saab. When auto the transmission is locked on the highway cruise, and the torque converter calls for a downshift; and it does not happen in time, you get the light.
You have to have a combination of load, speed, hill and throttle input to reproduce the error. How often remains a mystery. Reset by lifting battery cable. Good perhaps for a year, or a day?
In California, my 2005 Trailblazer on a certain fly over climb to the 73 toll road triggers the light. The same thing. I’m thinking of keeping the trans in 3rd until after the fly over to avoid.
Yes, the temperature, oil and electric gauges are far more important.
Which stops working the minute you go to a non-factory stereo.
