A couple of months ago, effective in November, National Grid, one of Massachusetts two dominant utilities, announced rate increases of a whopping 37 percent over last year. Other utilities in the region are expected to follow suit.
Its dramatic headlines like these that make rooftop solar sound so attractive to people wanting to save money. In fact, embedded within the online version of the Boston Globe story: Electric rates in Mass. set to spike this winter, is a link to another article: How to install solar power and save. The solar story points out: By now everyone knows that solar power can save homeowners big money on utility bills. It claims that solar works even in New Englands dreary winters and cites Henry K. Vandermark, founder and president of Solar Wave Energy in Cambridge, as saying: Even snow doesnt matter if your panels have a steep angle. It just slides right off them.

‘Slide off’??? Guess they aren’t familiar with rooftop ‘ice dams’...idiots.
The soviets in Red Hampshire just re-elected their Democrat reps in Congress (except one RINO who trades off with the Dem every two years) AND the Governor. They would rather FREEZE than vote for a conservative...the one who was running for the House got beaten like a rented mule.
Liberals really expect you to freeze in the dark...
You want to hear crickets? Ask them what the ideal temperature of the earth should be.
Maybe they will incude an ice excluder spray with every panel sold. Probably a re-labeled can of “Pam” cooking spray. Sneaky rascals.
And I don’t know how he’s going to get around all those overcast days.
LOL! Yeah, that usually stumps them pretty good. Or what is the absolute correct sea level.
Well duh. Sun lamps of course. Plugged in to the massive battery pack. It ain’t rocket surgery. LOL! Stay warm!!
I am about 15 miles south of Boston on the coast.
I have Nat. Grid. MY total electric bill for Jan 4-Feb 4 2014 was $217.02
The rate for electric supply only- was .0922 x 1299 kwh = $119.77 (Plus another $97.25 for misc charges from Nat. Grid.= 217.02
For the same kwh usage this winter with the increased kwh rate it would be .2424 x 1299kwh = $314.87,
(Plus at least a $97.25 Misc charge = $412 or more.
I don't believe most New Englanders are aware of what is going to happen to them until the bills come due.-Tom
And it’s gonna be painful. In Reno they add on 3 or 4 “green fees/misc charges” but we just had them put us on the “averaging” plan so at least the bill will be +/- a couple dollars every month year round. Makes it easier to budget.
Capt. Tom, I’m in the same area. Maybe, just maybe, once the tree huggers and the other dolts who live around here see their electric bills, they’ll finally start to wake up....
Coincidentally- I just got a call a few minutes ago from an electrical supplier , offering me a .1284 kwh residential rate if I lock in for 2 years.
I'm going to ride it out through the winter, as the Nat Grid spring rates are scheduled to come down below 12 cent's/kwh.
Yes I know, Nat. Grid might be lying.
I will take my chances.-Tom
LOL!
Hope the sun does its job. In the meantime i know where there are some bonfires going.
That’s a web image ,, I’m in FL ... I hope to do exactly what’s in the photo ,, solar mounted to a steel roof on the south and west exposures... by far the neatest way to install.
Lol. When we still lived there we used to joke that in FL freezing was 42 degrees. :-)
“They will produce enough power in the winter to run the fan in the mens room at McSwiggens Bar.”
You haven’t been there on a Friday night, I assume. The Yankee-3 reactor could not provide enough power to keep the air fresh there.
