Jay Gruden must convince Dan Snyder, Bruce Allen to move on from Robert Griffin III
Washington Post ^ | November 24, 2014 | Jason Reid

After a long climb, Jay Gruden finally became a head coach. And now Gruden shouldn’t allow Robert Griffin III’s problems to derail his career, too.

In his first season with the Washington Redskins, people within the organization say, Gruden has seen enough to determine that Griffin at best will be a long-term project as a pocket passer. If it were up to Gruden, the Redskins would spend this offseason finding a new starting quarterback. But owner Daniel Snyder and President and General Manager Bruce Allen will make that call.

Looks like Griffin will set back the Redskins a couple of seasons as they gave up a boat load of draft picks to move up.

I could give a hoot less about the Redskins problems. I want to know what the Saints are going to do about getting some Defensive Backs (Safety and Cornerbacks). The ones they have Suck.

I would dump Gruden, if he can’t teach, coach and motivate such a talent as RG-3, he proves himself unable to do his job. I am a Seattle fan, and love RW, but would rather have an unproven talent like him on my roster, than anybody but Luck or Russell Wilson.

Gruden was a QB and has some pretty good success getting them to perform. I’d like to think he can help develop RGIII, if anyone can. Although not a Redskins fan, I am rooting for RGIII to get it together. hes young and has time on his hands at this point.

I like RG3 and patience is needed to develop him. He’s been hurt and that has interrupted his progress. As for backup QB Colt McCoy he has a lot of upside and some starting NFL experience under his belt. He deserves another shot to start—maybe NY Jets who have drecks at QB now.

No, they need to dump Snyder, hands down the worst owner in football history.

You’re right, but how do you dump an owner?

Given that Snyder has defied the league with respect to the name of team, such a dumping may be close at hand.

Danny-boy better be careful about the company he keeps.

I watched the 49er-Redskin game Sunday and was shocked at how terribly RG3 performed. He had zero movement in the pocket. His inability to read the 49er’s defenses lead to him getting brutally sacked throughout the game. His inability to audible in response to what the defense was doing leads me to believe he isn’t spending the time learning what’s necessary to be an NFL QB.

The Washingon Post actually allowed the name “Redskins” to be used in this piece. I thought they were boycotting it??

Looks like Andrew Luck was the better draft pick!! Can I Que up the “I told you so” vibe Rush was so right in that the media sooo wants an AA QB to succeed that nothing else matters.

That could be true, what is also true is that Steve Young, a very good NFL QB looked HORRIBLE for a very long time. Once he hit his stride, he was dynamite. I see RG III as a very similar talent, and mind. I think he is suffering from “too many coaches” disease. Overthinking, worrying and stressing over every point. He needs to sit and learn, then come back when there is no worry about his body and its aches and pains. He will not make a huge contract now, but he will if he puts in the work for 1-2 years.

I watched RG3 a lot when he was a rookie, and I really liked how well he performed in the pocket, as well as his ability to run when forced out of the pocket. He seemed like an unusually gifted talent who had both qualities. And what an arm, a rocket! Then the injury, and he has not played the same since. He plays like someone who lost his mojo and is looking to get it back. I think that rookie year RG3 is still in there somewhere, and I am surprised that Gruden would give up on him so quickly instead of trying to bring it out. You don't have to speculate on the things he could do for the team if he developed. All you have to do is go back to the tape.

I'd like to see him on the Eagles or 49ers if the Redskins let him go. I would also like to see Belichick take a shot at him. If Brady retires in a few years, he'd be the age Steve Young was when he took over for Montana. That is a good analogy.

He probably needed to sit out the whole year.

Does he have a girlfriend who can tape some private conversations?

I watched the 49er-Redskin game Sunday and was shocked at how terribly RG3 performed.

As an Eagles fan, prior home of Randall Cunningham, Donovan McNabb, and Michael Vick I have seen first hand the instinct of NFL coaches to take a guy who is a "run first" athletic QB and tame him into a pocket passer. It never really works. These guys have big egos and they came to stardom by doing it their way, now they are told to throw it all away, be bad for a while, and eventually maybe be mediocre after they learn the system. They resist that, they don't buy in, and it leads to QB controversies just about every time.

It's possible that RGIII would naturally evolve to a pocket QB as he matures but right now he likely feels like he's being picked on, they are setting him up to fail, and he's lost faith. Perhaps a change of scenery where they accept the likelihood of injury in exchange for explosive playmaking is the only real prescription to save his career.

It’s not just about teaching and motivating. When you mortgage your future for a player you also mortgage that player’s future. Those multiple draft picks they gave away could have shored up the offensive line, given him some talent to throw to and improved the defense. It’s Gruden’s fault, he took charge of a bad team that’s going to stay bad until their owner stops being obsessed with big names and starts actually wanting to build a team.
