Who should or shouldn't be quarantined? (i.e., concerning Chris Christie's NJ quarantine rules)

Even though Amber Vinson has been declared Ebola-free, and has left Emory University Hospital, if this nation is to quarantine those (be they symptomatic or asymptomatic) who came into contact with someone like Thomas Duncan, then should those who have come into contact with Amber Vinson (be it on day 1 to the day she left the hospital) be quarantined?

If Kaci Hickox is "obviously ill," per Chris Christie, then she would obviously be symptomatic according to Chris Christie. If she is symptomatic, then Chris Christie would not only have to quarantine her, but anyone who came into contact with her.

Would those who came into contact with Vinson or Hickox ( even though those who came into contact with them aren’t symptomatic), would they still need to be quarantined according to Chris Christie?

What did Nigeria do? That may be the pattern to follow.

If we did what Nigeria did, then New Jersey would have border guards just outside its border with no one being let out of it and into another state nearby.

I think the symptomatic should be quarantined.

Mostly, I find it quite ironic that folks in the medical community, who want to isolate smokers, don’t want to isolate themselves.

You have a better chance of getting ebola from one of these folks sneezing in your face than getting cancer from a whiff of smoke outside.

Nigeria did not close its borders.

Baloney. Nigeria placed ALL of its ports and borders on red alert, intensified the guarding of its borders, brought in more border guards, etc.

Do you have a source for that? Why would Nigeria close its borders - it does not share a border with any affected country?

I think the symptomatic should be quarantined.

That's obvious, and too late. The USDA quarantines every horse that comes into the country to protect against certain diseases that would destroy that industry. Waiting until symptoms appear is way too late, as by that time the other horses stable together with the first are in trouble.

Dogs, as well as fruit bats, can carry the ebola virus. Heaven help us if some ebola patient falls over in a park and the local feral dogs check it out. Or a friendly dog simply licks the face of somebody sweating from a slight fever.

It's just not as simple as the CDC/NIH keep insisting.

Implying that since Nigeria dopes not share a border with a now-affected country does not mean that Nigeria didn’t do what it did.

An Ebola-infected man (Patrick Sawyer) landed in Lagos and Nigeria moved swiftly to try and stop the spread from this Patient Zero. Nigeria has been declared Ebola-free since August 31st and implemented all of the aforementioned steps.

WaPo, Wash Times and many others reported on this.

Nigerian officials took contact tracing to the max to end any chance of Ebola spreading within Nigeria.

Then governors in the US would than have to quarantine everyone (be they at that point asymptomatic or symptomatic) that came into contact with someone like Hickox or Vinson, even if someone like Hickox or Vinson was asymptomatic, too.

Yes, they did. But they did not close their borders (or ban travellers from affected countries, for that matter).

FWIW, in OH they did a good job. Anyone who had contact with Amber Vinson was in 21-day monitored quarantine. Classrooms where someone in them had contact with her were closed and thoroughly cleaned. It got real fussy at the airports. There was a lot done for public awareness of symptoms.

No one complained. In fact, it's very rare you'll hear us saying Mayor Jackson and Governor Kasich worked together and did a good job.

So, yeah, these whiners should accept their quarantine with some dignity and class. Other people have, and it seems to have worked out just fine.

Didn’t close their borders? Depends what you yourself define here as not being closed. Right at the very beginning, there was a border closing.

Have the states that surround New Jersey put their ports and borders on red alert? Have they even instituted a significant increase in border guard activity around New Jersey’s borders?

Tell me why all the states around New Jersey shouldn’t do theses things.

Were all those nurses and doctors at Emory hospital who came into contact with Vinson placed under quarantine?

EVERYONE entering the country should have to provide 45 days of travel history at a minimum. Then we’ll worry about who to quarantine.
