Question about submarines
Self | 10/26/2014 | LS

I noticed that the US Navy commissioned the USS North Dakota, but that it was "SSN" and not an SSBN, meaning it doesn't carry ballistic missiles.

When did they start applying STATE names to. SSNs, which used to have city names, since only ballistic missile subs carried state names?

I stumbled into a photograph of the brand-new, but ill-fated, US submarine, USS Corvina (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Corvina_(SS-226)). She was lost with all hands—never firing weapons at the enemy. Sad.

When we stopped producing battleships (that were always named after states) we replaced them with the modern equivalent (i.e., “Boomer” subs), and thus those replacements were named after states, as well.

Yes, I wrote about it in my book “Trident,” but these are ssBns, not attack subs, SSNs. I wonder why the Navy with the Virginia class SSNs began naming attack subs for states, not cities.

Kinda comes close-—basically it says whatever the Navy Sec decides. I’m just saying that traditionally only battleships and ballistic missile subs had state names, but that apparently has changed.

I think that sub only has reverse gear.

Have you been on one? I toured the USS Gurnard, a SSN, back in the 1980s and I’m short and it STILL was a squeeze. Talk about claustrophobia.

Either that or the only place it can dive to is the bottom.

LOL. Unfortunately the USS Lewinsky leaves an all-too-easy to identify trail . . . .

Depends on the Ships Class.
Naming convention varies by class.

Prior to the 688 class, fast attacks were named after fish.
688s were named after cities Virginia class are named after states.

Some classes are one offs like Narwhal, Bergal and Seawolf

....if they ever want to name a ship for our President, I suggest USS Obola.

Does the Navy have garbage scows?

Sarcastic, yes, but the fact is that few SSBNs were named after people. The Sam Nunn was named after one of the stauchest naval supporters in the senate. It has always been the case since WW I to name destroyers after American heroes, Farragut, John Paul Jones, The Sullivans, etc.

Always loved that movie. During a Jap air raid at port, the Captain asked “where’s Tony (forgot his character name)?” The seaman replied, “I don’t know sir, but when the bombs started falling he lit outta here on fire in a Deuce and a Half yelling something about ‘In confusion there is profit’ “ The boat scrounge, and the sub need a lot of parts.

I think a medical evac ship named USS Obola would be very appropriate.

San Antonio Spurs 6’ 11” center David Robsinson started in subs, but he didn’t stay there long.

My son is 6'2" and served as a bubblehead for 10 years.

He had lots of names for bulkheads.

Naming convention started to vary widely after the 688 and Ohio Class subs.

Prior to the 688 I think all Fast Attacks were named for fish or sea creatures.

Now they name these machines after cities, states, politicians.

Soon we will have the USS Micheal Jackson.

Of note.... Walt Disney designed the logo for my first boat

What a laugh. the John Warner — with Elizabeth Taylor doing the “going down” part of the capability of the submarine.

John Warner- a mental midget public embarrassment, who married Liz Taylor (she, a drug addict, boring a@@ biotch with multiple substance abuse problems and incredibly stupid woman— but then warner didn’t marry for brains, her “looks” were ok but uh, that field had been ploughed plenty).

Yeah, and he was a “nukular” engineer— so he said. What a laugh, and what a truly octomarroon wannabee officer. Utter failure— except at building crap quality “habitat” homes for his buddies in the real estate “affordable” homes racket. Habitat now being a complete moneymaking operation masquerading as public policy- in keeping with Carter’s “venture socialism” and “tut-tut” world morality.

You can bet warriors don’t use the dude’s name and indeed do call it the “23 Boat”. Imagine a SSN named obamaumao. With mixed lesbo/fem/male/homo crewmembers. Oh yeah, the dems have done soooo much for the Silent Service. LOL.

Oh, to wish one could put McCain in a “boat”. The flyboy disaster admiral’s son has a greaaaaaat animus against the US Submarine Service.

Should be mentioned that his animus extends to the further eroding of the service capablitiy of our nuclear sub fleet, by signing on to the “mixed gender” crews. Even the Israelis don’t do this— for obvious reasons. And with McCain’s “informed” views of the success of mixed gender crews on aircraft carriers (with their pregnancy rate a complete joke), he carries aids and abets the further degradation of one of the nation’s most important nuclear deterrents.
