Drink a 20-ounce soda daily, and you may be causing your cells to age as much as they would if you smoked, a study suggests. Researchers investigated DNA from 5,309 adults, focusing on telomeres, the caps on the ends of our cells' chromosomes, Time reports.

Funny how all this stuff is coming out suddenly. The effects of simple sugars on telomeres has been known for quite some time; there is no news here.

I believe in quality of life, not quantity. Besides myself, the only other person alive in my immediate family is my oldest sister who has been institutionalized most of her adult life due to alcoholism and dementia. She also smoked since her teens. She turned 74 this year, having lived longer than any other member of our family. I’ve never smoked, and don’t drink, so she’ll probably outlive me.

OK. Unless you outright commit suicide, you really don’t know what is “killing” you.

In actuality, soda pop is very unhealthy for you. I can't speak to it making your cells age faster but aside from that, it causes all sorts of other issues.
Beer is a much healthier drink than soda and when my kids were younger, I encouraged them to drink beer as opposed to soda pop.
To: SamAdams76
you encouraged children to drink beer?

HFCS has been much cheaper than sugar for decades, thanks to legislative protection of the US sugar industry.
Cane sugar is finally being added back to products, like soft drinks, usually as a marketing ploy.
Too late for the former workers of candy factories that have moved to Canada, or farmed out the manufacture to other countries.

“if it does shorten telomere length then it is a factor in shortening lifespan.
the longer you can keep telomeres the better.”
I know that’s stated often, but I’m not sure it’s really been proven.
The whole telomerase thing has seemed a bit of a hype.
Important enzyme, but key to immortality? I don’t think so.

A little touchy there. Looks like you need one.
