After remaining mostly silent since nude photos of her were taken from her phone and leaked online, actress Jennifer Lawrence has spoken out at length to Vanity Fair about the hack.
"It is not a scandal. It is a sex crime," Lawrence told Vanity Fair. "It is a sexual violation. Its disgusting. The law needs to be changed, and we need to change. Thats why these websites are responsible."
"Just the fact that somebody can be sexually exploited and violated, and the first thought that crosses somebodys mind is to make a profit from it. Its so beyond me. I just cant imagine being that detached from humanity. I cant imagine being that thoughtless and careless and so empty inside."
She went on: "Just because Im a public figure, just because Im an actress, does not mean that I asked for this. It does not mean that it comes with the territory. Its my body, and it should be my choice, and the fact that it is not my choice is absolutely disgusting."

“Then it would be an internet crime of some sort, yes. Theft, violation of privacy, etc.
But it wouldn’t be armed robbery or home invasion, anymore than swiping her photos is a sex crime. “
It may not be armed robbery, but anyone who’s ever been robbed can tell you that it is a physical violation. Anyone who’s ever seen their intellectual property stolen and used for ill-gotten gain can tell you that it feels worse than being robbed of your wallet.
And finally, anyone who’s EVER been a victim of identity theft will tell you they’d have rather someone came in to their home, beat them with a bat, and taken whatever they were going to take. Trying to get your life back, your job, your credit rating, your money, or insurance policies, etc. after identity theft is something that goes on for 10 years after it happens.
That’s all she’s saying. The pictures were private, and she took steps to maintain them privately. She feels violated.
True, but if you own the Hope diamond you don't just leave out sitting on the living room table.
Phones being hacked, stolen, lost, etc. hasn't just started last week. People know the risk and make the choices they might have to deal with later.
A photo audition for the casting couch?
brain dead idiot - you don’t want people to see you nude - don’t take pictures of yours self nude. Problem solved.
LOL what idiot told you that?
...do you not know that the saints will judge the world? And if the world is to be judged by you, are you incompetent to try trivial cases?
Do you not know that we are to judge angels? How much more, then, matters pertaining to this life!
So if you have such cases, why do you lay them before those who have no standing in the church?
I say this to your shame. Can it be that there is no one among you wise enough to settle a dispute between the brothers...
-- 1 Corinthians 6:2-5
Thanks for the laugh, much needed.
Hope you don’t lose too much sleep over this poor girl and her troubles.
People who think less regulation is better than more are purporting to tell people what they should be doing with their smartphones.
If Lawrence wants to take nude selfies, why does anybody care about whether that is right or wrong as a conservative? Shouldn’t conservatives share Lawrence’s sense of outrage, given she followed the rules as she understood them - delete them and you’re good.
The original poster was asking “Why?” As in - why take the photos?
As a conservative, our position should be it doesn’t matter WHAT she did with her phone. Somebody stole her stuff and she feels personally violated.
But right on cue, the holier than thou crowd forgot that any sin will keep you from Heaven, and decided to question someone else’s morality as if somehow they had no hand in personally crucifying Christ themselves.
If someone wants to take nude selfies, that’s on them, and frankly between them and their God. However, regardless of what was taken, there isn’t a single conservative that can’t empathize with the sense of personal violation one has when ANYTHING is stolen from them.
We could win both houses back in super majorities by simply pointing out that the party that used to rail against government insinuating itself into every aspect of their lives has become the party that has elevated the artform.
People want to be left alone - quiet enjoyment. You can’t even own a bakery anymore without being threatened by militant homosexuals.
It appears that telling other people what they ought to be doing is a truly bipartisan pursuit.
Is "Peeping Tom" a sex crime? Is it a sexual fetish?
Is stealing someone's nude photos just the digital age equivalent of the peeping Tom?
-PJ
Alex, you took that out of context.
1 Corinthians 6:1 If any of you has a dispute with another, dare he take it before the ungodly for judgment instead of before the saints?
RinaseaofDs was talking about judging others actions, not settling a claim between two parties.
I don’t. But I am interested in privacy / intellectual property in the digital world.
That idiot would be Jesus:
“Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven.”
Luke 6:37
Your rambling response did not address the two main questions I posed to you.
It’s too hard for me to discern what your point of view is. So I yield back to you.
It’s strange to me that people need laws to prevent them from doing what is wrong.
Are you going to tell me that smutty picture theft is actually worse than rape as well?
I agree with you that her pictures were stolen and that she feels violated. That does not make it a sex crime, nor does it excuse her naivete regarding the web. She is a world-wide celebrity!
There is nothing that is completely secure once it is digitized. Nonetheless I hope she and the others find some legal redress.
LOL!
The point remains the same. If the original image files didn’t exist in the first place, they couldn’t have been hacked. If they were stored on her iCloud account, they had to be taken with her phone or stored there after being sent to her. Either way, the images exist and were exploited. She seems so level headed and plainspoken in other matters. One would’ve thought that she would be above the behavior of the nude selfie or worse. Disappointed.
I don’t agree it was a sex crime. I think she’s upset and she feels violated, as if she had been a victim of a sex crime. I can see that.
Worse than rape?
I don’t think so.
We should maintain a high expectation of privacy from our vendors. This idea that nothing is secure once digitized does not have to be the last word on the matter, nor should it be. There’s going to be a privacy backlash, if there isn’t one already. Market is in the best position to do something about this, not the government.
