U.S. Troops Battling Ebola Get Off to Slow Start in Africa
online.wsj.com ^ | Sept. 28, 2014 8:06 p.m. ET | Drew Hinshaw in Robertsville, Liberia, and Betsy McKay in Atlanta

On Saturday, a handful of troops from the Navy's 133rd Mobile Construction Battalion led a bulldozer through thigh-high grass outside Liberia's main airport, bottles of hand sanitizer dangling from their belt loops.

They had been digging a parking lot in the East African nation of Djibouti this month when they received a call to build the first of a dozen or more tent hospitals the U.S intends to construct in this region. The soldiers started by giving the land a downward slope for water runoff—"to keep out any unwanted reptiles," said Petty Officer Second Class Justin Holsinger.

While this team levels the earth, superiors hash out the still-uncertain details of the American intervention here.

The epidemic is showing signs of gaining speed—6,574 cases had been reported officially as of Sept. 23, with 3,091 deaths. Those fatalities are more than double the number of both a month ago. The actual number of cases is believed to be three or four times as high. Had no international aid come, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said, the number of cases in Liberia and Sierra Leone might have soared to 1.4 million by mid-January.

this

plus the superstitious population believes that ebola is a plot by the West to kill them- so white guys (any guys) in military uniforms with big guns building “field hospitals” (really? biohazard level 4 field hospitals?) facilities that only treat a few elites (and white westerners get airlifted out) are sitting ducks, especially if they are ordered to back up the Liberian military sealing off quarantine zones and going into villages and neighborhoods to collect the dying and dead bodies

Who told you that the treatment centers built to cycle through patients and having 1700 beds at a time are “biohazard 4 field hospitals” or that they are being built in 17 locations to treat only “a few elites” instead of thousands and thousands and thousands, and thousands of Africans?

Build a base. Spend big bucks to bring in expensive buildings, equipment and gear. Get pulled out and waste all that time and investment. Go to another country and repeat.

Is someone building a base somewhere that we don't know about?

The game of Ebola Roulette continues...

*click* spin *click* spin *click* spin…

Eeeee-bolllll-aaaaaa ping!

Bring Out Your Dead

We’re gonna need

a bigger cart!

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.

So far the false positive rate is 100%.

At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.

*sigh* Such is life, and death...

He won’t use the word “We.” He’ll say “The U.S. underestimated....” Just like he did yesterday with regard to ISIS. He won’t get close to any personal responsibility.

A more descriptive term for tent cities built to cycle through 1700 patients is "death camps".

That is exactly how Africans view Ebola treatment centers right now, and it is going to get much worse as the US Army builds bigger ones.

Force protection will be a major problem for whoever runs these facilities. Healthcare workers have already been killed by rioting mobs who believe the workers are somehow responsible for the epidemic.

Great, more childish fantasy, now the future treatment centers are “death camps”.

And again, they aren’t even built yet, but you already have a reality created in your imagination.

“You mean inoculation.”

“What’s a inoculation?”

“... bottles of hand sanitizer...”

I did a google search the other day on that. It does not kill viruses - it it best to do the long, methodical soap washing that doctors do. The article did say that hand sanitizer can make it more slippery for the virus to stay on your hand.

(Great - battling Ebola and hoping if it lands on you it will just fall off.)

It is 17 units, with 100 beds each. That is what they said they could use a few days ago. Given the cases are doubling every 2-3 weeks, anything we have offered to do seems too little too late

read between the lines on obamas announcements

and exactly how many “field hospitals” our troops *(who are assigned under the Liberian Ministry of Defense) are going to build? (The country’s chief medical officer just put herself under 21 day quarantine because her assistant died of ebola). And how many mass produced field hospitals in 17 different locations has US military built (in equatoriual africa where the first step is to mow down the grass with machetes) that are capable of supporting staff under level 4 lab conditions? Those space suits require power and air conditioning and a total seal as does the treatment ward- and all under armed guard from angry desperate mobs

And how and how many ebola patients (who Obama has assured us our troops are “not going to be in contact with”) are “recycled” through the hospitals? Do you mean to incinerators? Are we talking an airlift to the West? Exactly who gets on the planes? And under what conditions?

thank God our military is holding the line at sending a few hundred guinea pigs at a time. If they get sick they will never see home again.

it has been admitted our show of support is more style than substance

easy to do when it’s pre obola ordering someone elses sons and daughters being sent over there to a hot zone to “build 17 field hospitals” and “train 500 medics a week”

where is the UN? the WHO (both fundraising on ebola) CDC? the Europeans? The Chinese? The muslms? Hello- anyone?

I can’t think offhand of the other countries I have read about besides Japan and some European countries? As bad as it is now, it is still in only a few countries, in one corner of one continent. It would be horrendously much worse if Nigeria had not quelled the outbreak they had at the airport.

well the aussies are out

not willing to send people, who unlike obola’s military troops, are too precious to waste

just willing to throw in a few million more dollars in an effort to look like they are doing something

The SeaBees will return to port in Gulfport, Mississippi, between New Orleans and Mobile, Alabama. Nice area for the Ebola Virus to take hold along with a great number of feral pigs so there can be a natural host with which it can survive.

Good heavens. What a dreadful scenario. Could Obola be that clueless? (WE all know the answer.)
