Toronto Police shoot and kill a pitbull after batons are not enough to release its ‘lock-jaw grip’
National Post ^ | September 26, 2014 | Rachel Surman

Posted on 09/28/2014 11:00:00 AM PDT by george76

Police received a call for an “unknown trouble” at a Toronto Community Housing Corp. home at Winchester Street and Rose Avenue in Cabbagetown, where they saw bystanders “screaming and yelling” while trying to pry the pit bull away from the shih tzu.

“The policeman was hitting the dog so hard with his baton that it flung out of his hands but the pit bull would not let go,” said Samantha Thornton, a resident in the area. She said the owner of the shih tzu was in “hysterics.”

According to Ms. Thornton, police shot the dog twice in the leg and when it still didn’t release the shih tzu, they shot it in the head.

...

Residents in the neighbourhood told the National Post that pit bulls were bred in the building. Pit bull breeding has been illegal since the 2005 Dog Owner’s Liability Act and owners can face a $10,000 fine and six months jail time for noncompliance.

i think that and a swift kick to the nuts would get them to let go.

You won’t find me constantly defending or constantly attacking police officers who shoot dogs (or anything else). It takes a rather mindless person to fall into either of those categorical traps. But can we be a little more careful here and say this animal was an “alleged” pitbull? An animal that has been unscrupulously bred and trained to become (or abused into becoming) aggressive, vicious, a fighting dog, etc., is not representative of the breed. A hellhound can be produced from any breed. It doesn’t mean the entire breed is bad.

The officer was probably administering body blows with the baton. Wrong. Strike the snout. Crushing or bloodying the nasal passages will prevent the dog from breathing and they will release.

After they shoot the obviously uncontrolled pit bull, they should whip the owner in a public square like they do in Singapore. There are no pit bulls biting anyone in Singapore.

Your response contains false dogma (no pun). The photos show dogs that look like pit bulls. Pits kill more people every year than all other types of dogs combined. So a pit involved in a mauling is not anomalous and we can’t logically say that it’s behavior is not representative of the breed.
I’ve read too many accounts of people who raise the dogs gently and then are shocked when the dog becomes agressive. This is why SPCA units are stuffed full of pit bulls. Even this article, someone says this specific dog is normally nice. That’s the problem with pits. They are nice until they are not and then someone or someone’s pet can die or be maimed.
The majority of types of dogs bite and release but pits have been bred to hold on - this is a prized trait among pit bull owners and breeders that they call “gameness”. They have physical attributes and behaviors specific to fighting dogs that are not comparable to other dog types. Most types of dogs won’t hold on despite shouting, screaming, baton strikes and gunshots.
“A hellhound can be produced from any breed. It doesn’t mean the entire breed is bad.”
That’s propaganda. Pits strip arms off, they get out of their enclosures and go hunting for people. They usually don’t even bark or growl prior to attack (a pit fighting advantage) so I’ve seen videos where people can’t figure out how to respond as a pit bull runs up to them - some people realize that you don’t know if the dog wants to play or will try to kill you until he seizes your face or leg. Pit behavior is comparable to wild animals tamed to receive food from people but still unpredictable and capable of damage comparable to wild animal maulings.

You can make a pitbull let go by blowing in his ear.

The large dog had the small dog in it’s mouth for an extended time. Long enough for the police to be called and to arrive. The small dog was not killed and is recuperating, no information on the extent of its injuries, if any, is available at this time. Keep in mind, the large dog had ample time if it had wanted to kill the smaller dog to do it, one shake would have accomplished it.

I spent enough time on posts to this article last night and have no wish to repeat them to the closed minded blood thirsty fanatics here today. My comments on the article are posted under the name northern_sentinel, if anyone is interested in seeing them.

A pit locked on to a little kid’s leg, on the sidewalk, in front of our house, while we were watching football, on TV. My room mate ran into the kitchen, pulled the biggest knife, out of the drawer, hurried outside, and plunged the blade deep into the pit’s neck. It was a gruesome scene, but one of the responding EMTs told my pal that he probably saved that kid’s life.

Of course they don’t have locking jaws. But they won’t release their bite and are strong enough it cannot be forced open.

Yes any dog can be vicious. It just so happens the % of pitbull and pitbull mixes have a much higher percentage of vicious dogs.

The main point in this article is NOT that the big dog bit the small dog. What is much more important is to realize that dogs are animals after all. No matter how well trained, they have primitive instincts inherited from 50 million years of evolution.

So, in a civilized society, NO ANIMAL SHOULD BE RUNNING AROUND IN AN UNCONTROLLED FASHION. When outside of the home the dogs must be on a short leash and under control. If a dog does damage to anyone, the owner should be whipped in public. They do that in Singapore and there are no such reports of serious dog biting in Singapore news. But why would we learn from others? We are after all smarter than all others!

A good friend of mine had an American Staffordshire named Daisy. She was wonderful! Doug would tell her, “JB’s here!” and she’d go nuts. Soon as she saw me she flopped on her back for a tummy rub, then near lick me to death. Great dog! Doug came home from softball one day, and was standing in the living room, talking on the phone when wonderful Daisy launched herself from the sofa, and latched on to his thigh. She wouldn’t let go, locking jaws or not! Luckily for Doug, the guy on the phone heard him screaming and called the cops. By the time they got there with the med squad, Doug had killed his lovable pet with his softball bat, and he was passing out on the floor. Meds told him in another minute or two, he would have bled out! 84 stitches. They’re a fighting breed, and don’t seem to mentally stable.

He was a good dog. He was going to enroll in Obedience School next semester and eventually become a therapy dog. Tragic.

There are people who believe, and who post on FR 'pit bull' threads, that pit bulls have locking jaws. After you say 'of course they don't,' Google it to see whether it's obvious to everyone that they don't have locking jaws.

It is extremely difficult to force a pit bull's jaws open if it doesn't want to open it's jaws.

“NO ANIMAL SHOULD BE RUNNING AROUND IN AN UNCONTROLLED FASHION.’

No need to shout that at me FRiend.
As I posted to the article....

“All dogs should be properly contained.
It is one of the basic principles of responsible dog ownership.”

Containment is synonymous with control.

As for Singapore and the way they do things, you’re welcome to it,
I’ll stick with Western Civilization and work to defend and improve it.

Did anything in my post say that I recommended a American Pit Bull Terrier as a pet, or that I don't think we have a problem with dogs that have Pit Bull Terrier characteristic?

No, nothing said that, nor that I wanted a fighting breed.

I simply stated that the much-repeated myth that pit bulls have locking jaws is untrue.

You'll notice this thread was about 'pit bulls.' Your response is about more than 'pit bulls.'

You'll notice Cesar mentioned the bull dog and the presa canario. Those aren't 'pit bulls.' There are a lot of 'not pit bull' breeds that I wouldn't want because they are strong, aggressive, mega-alpha, protection or even bear-hunting dogs with a history of killing people. American Bullies. Alapaha Blue Blood Bulldogs. Cana Presarios. Caucasian Ovcharkas (definitely not Caucasian Ovcharkas. Definitely. Possibly more than any other breed.) Tosa Inus. American Bandogges. Dogo Argentinos. Boer Boels. Gull Dongs. Fila Brasileiros.

I could continue, but the list is quite long and there are many breeds that I consider more dangerous than a pit bull. We're lucky that these breeds aren't available in large numbers to American thugs.

I’d rather hook an index finger in his ear and shove my thumb into his eye socket.

Poor water (or soda, beer, etc.) into it’s ear. It will open and close it’s jaws and shake it’s head to get it out. I saw somebody do this and it works.
