(Reuters) - Microsoft Corp will unveil a new name for its best-known product on Tuesday when it offers the first official glimpse of its latest Windows operating system.

The project, known for the past few years as "Threshold" inside the software company and "Windows 9" outside it, will likely get an entirely new brand, or just be called Windows, analysts said, ahead of its full release early next year.

Is it because they made it do something else besides put up the blue screen?

I don't mean to suggest mac is without problems, and truth be told I've never owned one, but I bought a Windows 8 PC about 18 months ago and right after the Norton anti virus expired, I was so choked with ad ware I couldn't use the thing.

I renewed Norton, which helped, but it's still not good. I've actually taken to using my Windows 2000 desktop, which works fine for my purposes. But, it shouldn't be like that.

Started switching from XP to Mac’s in 2007. Completed the process in 2010.
Still use Win 7 at work. But like OSX waaaaay better.

Last Christmas my granddaughter got a laptop w/ Win 8.

That is without a doubt the most unintuitive ,madding, frustrating program I’ve ever used.
Cured me of the silly thoughts I had of getting a cheap PC laptop.

Oh, and to top it off I was in Best Buy recently. Took a tour of the Surface Pro 12 “tablet.
$1300 !!!
Heck, for that I can get a nice 13” Macbook Pro.
A no brainer.

There will be no start button. There will be no icons. There will be no menus.

The ‘user experience’ will involve blinking a certain number of times to launch applications or touching one’s nose to a certain location on a touchscreen.

My step daughter who runs her own IT business, has the same issues you are having. She advises Mac’s with a windows 7, running in the back ground. Our computer is a custom built by her gaming one, her dad plays at home casino games, and we have a lot of music and photos, Win 7, and unless forced to update, won’t. Will go to a Mac, which ever one she suggests when this several yr old dinosaur crashes. Thank GOD we do back up and Cloud.

My older Corolla was not blue tooth equipped. I was using a single ear bud with in line mike to drive some what hands free, and hear better. People think they can drive with both ears plug into their phone. Not legal, you have to hear ER vehicles outside your car.

But I ran into a big issue with my non blue tooth car, which gets about 100 miles on it a month, and new twin hearing aids. So I called At & T our carrier, and asked about an external unit I could use. They suggested Jabra Tour for which they wanted $80. Found one on Amazon Prime for $53. It solved that issue. Answers calls and makes them. Fits on the visor. Takes up to 2 users.

Why would you buy a IPhone 5, which has no memory card? When a Samsung Note 3, 5 in screen, lets you add up to 64 gig micro memory card? And you can turn off some of the crap you don’t use. Love the Task Killer.

But how is that a Win 8 problem? I'm not sure it's even a Norton issue.
You need ad blocking SW like Adblock Plus (free) and for your UI, try Classic Shell (free).

Microsoft had better get it right. They have botched their ambitious attempt of Windows, Phones, XboxOne all rolled in one ‘user friendly’ OS vision.

It’s all good trying to capture new young and hip users, but not allow perfectly good old system(s) to be available to their old customers is one big fatal mistake.

Microsoft is essentially dictating to their ‘loyal customers’ that THEY decide what’s good for them.

Have had a Note 2 for 2 years. Bought a battery charger that came with a spare battery. Just rotate them whenever the need arises. Wouldn't want to have to do without that capability. This phone is still so useful, I don't feel the need to pony up for a Note 4. My gadget loving self feels otherwise.

I am always puzzled by the Windows 8 haters. Windows 8 is basically Windows 7 plus a few performance enhancements plus a “start screen” instead of a start menu plus a tablet friendly mode for apps that want to use that. You can still have your desktop just as before (sans start menu).

What is it about that which is “so egregious” to you? I generally want to understand what people find so objectionable.

I don't know, I'm not a tech guy, but I've been a MSFT user since Windows 95 and (with the exception of Windows Me) this is the worst, clunkiest version I've ever used. Like the article said, it seems they tried to make it a tablet OS and it's useless with a keyboard and mouse.

Maybe Bill Gates should stop with the common core and his sucking up to the regime and get back to the computer business.

I got fed up and bought an iMac. Unimpressed. The email program sets up nice and easy but it doesn’t organize very well. It doesn’t save all your sent emails. Just some. The photo program is goofy. The finder thing is darn near useless. I still bought another Win 7 machine. Imac makes your photos look great. That is the one thing I like. I have had this iMac for about 4 months and it has locked up about 5 times so far.

Good luck!

“I am always puzzled by the Windows 8 haters...”

“What is it about that which is “so egregious” to you?”

Sheese! Where to begin...

Why did Microsoft stop selling Windows 7 completely when Windows 8 was launched? Aircraft and ships navigation software did not, and does not operate on Windows 8. It was a terrible mistake on the part of Microsoft. They do sell Windows 7 computers now, but only because of the push-back by the business community and their NEED for a Windows 7 based platform.

My first smart phone was a windows 6.5 phone. I loved it. They came out with the next generation of Windows phone and I did not like it at all - I just do not like the tiles in Windows 8. It’s a complete waste of space to me. I, personally, just don’t get the concept.

I had two Mac’s prior to Windows ‘95 being released (and I still have ‘em). I have had virtually every version of Windows on an array of computers over the last 19 years. Computers that I personally bought and paid for myself. The Windows platform is simple to navigate - but NOT in Windows 8. I’m not spending MY money on it.

My clients who have Windows 8.0 machines cannot upgrade to 8.1 - even though it’s free and supposedly can be done. The damn software just will not upgrade, and Microsoft will not make IE 11 available to Windows 8.0 users. Windows 8.0 does NOT have a classic start button - it’s in 8.1 because of consumer demand. My clients with 8.0 have to use third-party software to make their computers work like THEY want and EXPECT them to.

I think that’s egregious enough, don’t you?

It’s not like I am a Microsoft hater, I buy their products (I have three versions of Office Professional - the expensive one) as well as many other Microsoft software products.

Windows 8 is like a bad neighbor.

You are kidding, right?

Everyone except a few true believers, despise, detest and abhor Windows 8. And that’s its good points. Other than that it is a wonderful operating system.

It also frees us from our addiction to our computers. Because it is unusable we can get back to watching the soap operas on television. Time much better spent.

"What is it about that which is “so egregious” to you?"

Why did they make me learn a new front end in order to get to my old programs? I don't care a flyin' fig about the new "capabilities". The computer is a tool, for heaven's sake, not the center of my universe or a destination vacation site.
