The bear began to follow the hikers and they scattered... Four of them regrouped but Patel was missing and they contacted police, it said. Patel's body was found about two hours later.
"Evidence at the scene indicated that the victim had been attacked by a bear.

In New York state, a bear killed a 5-month-old girl in 2002 after knocking her out of a stroller and dragging her into the woods of the Catskills Mountains.

“Bears, mountain lions and even wolves have been permitted to return to these areas.”
I have been told by very credible sources that NY is getting paid by NJ to relocate their ‘problem’ bears.
My biggest concern is that they are releasing some of them practically in our backyard! We are very remote and our property borders a 2000 acre section of state land. We have had bears in our gardens 100 ft. from the house, as well as directly on our back deck no more than 5 ft. from our picture window.
Believe me, it’s a shock to hear a noise outside and open the curtains only to look directly into the eyes of a 400 lb. black bear bending a 1” heavy steel pipe (not a tent pole) like it was made of plastic just to get to our bird-feeder.
I’ve had numerous encounters with bears during a lifetime of working (logging in the northwest) and living in the woods. Generally, they were timid and split when yelled at. These NJ bears seem to have an attitude and being scared of humans is not one of their traits.
I remember when the baby was taken off the porch during a mid-day family gathering in the Catskills. That’s bold!
Mrs. panax spends a lot of time in her gardens this time of year and I will shoot, without hesitation, if I see one while she’s out there. Guess I’ll have to deal with the authorities later IF they find out about it before my neighbor and his backhoe get here.
Good advice except when hiking in areas where open carry is prohibited.
When hiking in black bear country, I’ve CC .45 super although we are looking at making a permanent move, if we do I’ll switch to .45 roland or 10mm glock.
I’m good to carry in CT and open carry is okay in the woods. They frown on carrying a long gun out of season with no hunting lic.
A few encounters w/ rock-salt loads or beanbag loads will learn 'em pretty quick. Don't let em get bold, or it will only get worse.
Well, that foolish woman in Germany who jumped into the polar bear cage found out that they weren’t so cute and cuddly.

That reminds me, where I’m going, you can’t carry a long gun during hunting season without a valid hunting license.
Honestly, I’m old and tired, a pistol is a big load when I’m hiking, let alone a long gun sufficient for bear.

Not as quick as my Marlin .444 can spit out a series of 265 gr. slugs.
