he Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks.
No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. There is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

I am going to be trying some additional cool weather greens, lettuce, and spinach as part of my winter garden. I have had pretty good luck just using row covers and straw.
This year, I am locating it near the outdoor electric outlet, so that I can put a 100 watt bulb in there if I think I need to at night.
I still have carrot seeds that I will use. I have to say that the winter carrots that I planted in the fall are the only time I every had any carrot crop at all. Carrots planted in the spring don’t do diddly for me.
While looking at Baker Creek catalog I was several carrots that were kinda different, and so I think I’ll get some of those to try too.
Spinach is the biggie for me. It’s so expensive here in the winter time, that I won’t buy it from the store. I will also have some peppers and tomatoes in doors again this winter.
Just a little fresh home grown produce in the winter makes a big difference for good eats.

I failed at the ducking, but managed to get quite a bit of my chores done in spite of that.
All of the potted perennials the Mrs. had on the deck have been moved to permanent homes in the ground.
The season’s first load of sawmill scrap is on the woodpile, and the season’s first trailer tire flat has been dropped off at the tire store for repair.
Lawn is mowed. Half of my orchard trees are fertilized. 1/4 of the garden has been weed-whacked. Pumpkins harvested. Compost heap turned over. Broody hen moved to private quarters. 30 pave stones laid at the gate to the hen yard.
I even managed a couple hours in the pond with Nanner yesterday afternoon.
Wow, 4 inches of rain. No rain here for several weeks. May get some this week.
Have decided on the air rifle I want. Walmart even has them. It’s a “GAMO Silent Cat Air Rifle”. With regular lead pellets, it’s silent for in town use. Do you some sort of night vision? We have critters at night.

Also in one of the descriptions, it was noted that the main use was pickling or adding to an apple pie.
I had already decided that it could be a substitute for apples and was going to try it in a pie. I am thinking that they would taste good as a substitute for candied apple rings.
It is seems to be the only cantaloupe that we can grow. The packet was a free seed from one of the catalogs. I was hoping it would have a peach taste. It actually tastes bland with just a hint of lemon.
Our grand daughter really liked them the first year, but as she has grown older - not so much. We didn't plant any this year, but have several scattered around in places where we have never planted them.
It appears that they will naturalize. The original info on it indicated that it was used by native Indians in America.

Try renting a live trap and haul the critters to Washington DC...

I have a red laser on my Ruger 38 special but it’s a serious weapon I couldn’t fire outside in town unless a human was trying to do me harm - wouldn’t use it for an animal varmint.
I can check to see if a there is a laser to mount on an air rifle (that doesn’t cost a fortune).

No regular cats, but there was a wild cat from the woods that came into this area and that is not that unusual - none while I’ve been here. Due to that possibility, Bob goes with the Yorkie outside if it’s dark. Yes, I would shoot the wild cat as no ones’ pet is safe when a wild cat comes out of the woods.
Ok. I just wondered. I know I couldn’t hit a critter without it, unless it was big and close. I like the idea of something that’s not too loud.
I’ve been told that for self defense at home, I should get the judge public defender. I like the fact that it uses the same ammo as a 410 shot gun or 45 long.
My good friend in Bandera likes the “judge” handgun. He recommended it to me when I was going to get another handgun. I thought it was too large for what I wanted as I wanted to be able to carry one with me and the Ruger fits to carry without causing notice. The judge would be great to have at home.

There are plenty of wild cats here. People come back here to drop off unwanted cats and they have established themselves in the woods around here.
