What the Numbers Show About N.F.L. Player Arrests
NY Times ^ | 9/13/2014 | Neil Irwin

Off-the-field violence by professional football players is coming under new focus this week after the release of a video involving the star Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice, followed by a bungled response by the National Football League.

But what do the numbers show about N.F.L. players’ tangles with the law more broadly? Are some teams’ players more likely to get into legal trouble? Are arrests rising or falling? What are the most common offenses?

USA Today maintains a database of arrests, charges, and citations of N.F.L. players for anything more serious than a traffic citation. Maintained by Brent Schrotenboer, it goes back to 2000 and covers, to date, 713 instances in which pro football players have had a run-in with the law that was reported by the news media.

Too bad they can't put that kind of effort into covering Obama Admin wrongdoings.

N.F.L. Sees Only What It Wants to See

Same can be said about Obama's Just Us department and Holder.

Several college football programs could rival the NFL with these problems. Nebraska, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Florida State, Ohio State, Auburn, Miami, Texas, SMU, Colorado, and USC come to mind.

Very interesting statistics there. I’m not surprised to see the Giants near the very bottom of the list of criminal incidents among players. They’ve had a couple of high-profile knuckleheads over the years (Lawrence Taylor and Plaxico Burress, for example), but they’ve always tried to steer clear of “problem children” when putting their roster together. For years the had been known to screen out potential draft picks simply on the basis of intelligence tests, psychological profiles, and a player’s attitude/demeanor.

How soon before USA Today is indicted for racism?

NFL decides to impose severe restrictions on teams’ players who are involved in legal trouble.

NFL cancels contracts for those players.

NFL consolidates from 32 teams to 24 teams.

Quite a few of their draft picks were team captains?

I’m waiting for someone to bitch because the vast majority of players that have been in trouble/suspended have been Black. The NFL and their rules are obviously ......RACIST!!!

I no longer watch the NFL, and a personal ban on college football is not too far behind.

I stopped going to professional sports events and even watching on TV when the League took back Michael Vick. It told me that all they care about is the money. I will not buy tickets nor will I watch any sports event on TV until they clean up their collective acts. This latest “in your face” item just tells me that I made the right choice.

LOL-

They are coming after the NFL- why?-

The thugs that play in the NBA- (up here-
J.R. rider, Lattrell spreewell from years ago)

Are absolutely CRAZY- Threating to kill coaches-
then assaulting him!- Inviting Crips to team practices!

The list goes on... not sure if ANY pro sports is
worth becoming a “Fan”

Well when you look at the background of half these players they come from the Hood and when they get to the NFL they are still in a Hood frame of mind and bring their little gangsta friends along for the ride.

All the people wearing his number talking about what a great guy Rice is.

This mania over sports is ridiculous.

As long as their team wins who cares what kind of evil they perpetrate off the field.

Even if his claims of defending himself are true if you’re twice the size of your “aggressor” you should be able to “defend yourself” without inflicting such injuries on your “aggressor”.

Anyone that punches his wife is an a-hole, in or out of the NFL. For some fresh air take a look at Russell Wilson of the Seahawks - they don’t come any better as a man and role model. He’s at Children’s Hospital in Seattle every week with teammates visiting sick kids. He does not swear, drink alcohol or wear tattoos. Devout Christian. There are many others like him in the league that we don’t hear about.
