The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks.

No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. There is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

Greetings from Missouri. The heat is not quite as bad today just the upper 90s. My maters and peppers are suffering a bit from the heat. I need to quit being lazy and stake out a shade cloth.

Hubby's peppers are continuing their robust production. He brought in another 5 gallon bucket full yesterday for freezing and dehydrating. I am eating one or more a day in stir fry.

Mr. Basil is just about ready to harvest again. It surely must be root bound by now. It's in a 7" pot and has been producing more than I use since 2010.

The lemon tree has 2 lemons that are almost totally yellow with just a smidge of green in tiny spot. I will likely harvest those this week. Will let the others grow on the tree for a while.

Hope all is well with you and your gardens. Have a great weekend. God Bless.

Got peppers coming out of my ears! Pretty excited about it. We’ve frozen quite a bit, that was supplemented by runs to the local farmer’s market. Gearing up to start canning for the season. Less than 60 days left until we’ll be seeing snow, or a real potential of it!

Pinging the list.

I had a request to repost this question on the most current thread. If anyone has any info on the subject, please share it with gunnyg:

Re Bamboo Growing!
***

Re BB Bamboo, I have seen numerous comments online to the effect that the Buddha Belly effect is best achieved by “stressing,” i.e. minimum water, tight container, max sun, etc.

Seems to me, that “stressing” may also apply to various other bamboos, with similar results, but I have never seen any mention of this anywhere one way or another.

At present, I have purchased 5 kinds of bamboo, all runners w/the exception of two clumpers, Kimmei and Wamin.
Any comments on info re the above (stressing)?

I will use all 5 in containers as patio/deck plants.

Had some in-ground Buddha Belly, etc. many years ago in California.

ThakYa for your attention...appreciated!

Dick Gaines

Sometimes my freezer is just a holding place for stuff that I want to can in the winter when it’s not so hot and the extra heat from the process is appreciated more.

I have gotten gift bamboo in tight little containers, and I just stick ‘em in the dirt. They grow beautifully into a nice thicket.

Of course, I live in FL. Your mileage may vary!

I’d like to have a thicket of Rosa Rugosa around the perimeter of our little acre lot. It’s supposed to spread enough to make a nearly impenetrable barrier.

That could maybe keep out some of the dogs and two legged critters that might want to roam around.LOL

LOL! If you have enough Bamboo on your property, you might want to invest in an attack-panda.

Here's a pic of some of our tomatoes and jalapenos that Mr. T. harvested on 9/1:

We grew them from seed. :)

All I know about bamboo is we had some growing wild and it was impossible to kill. It’s invasive like nobody’s business. I wouldn’t intentionally plant it.

Go for it! In Baltimore, md, I did see a corner lot with the rose-bush hedge along the sidewalks. Seemed pretty formable as a 3 foot barrier.

Lovely weather we've been having in Central Missouri since my return from the land of fruits and nuts.

Dumped a bit over 5" out of the rain gauge earlier in the week. The flight from Chicago to CoMO Monday evening was not at all pleasant. We circled the airport for close to an hour waiting for a break in the storm so the place could land safely.

My pond excavation is once again full of water. That may not be a really bad thing as it was getting quite dry and a bit hard to dig.

The garden is still producing faster than we can pick. I found this butternut squash hiding behind the horseradish. The sun tea jar is there to provide scale. I've never seen a butternut this big.

gunnyg is the one that is interested in bamboo. I don’t really have it in my gardening plans.

Lemon tree in Missouri? Is it in a greenhouse? A friend in Maine has a greenhouse with orange, lemon and lime trees.

Nice harvest. Thanks for sharing the picture.

Hubby just reported that he has 3 to 4 inch zukes growing. Looks like we’ll get to make some zuke spear pickles soon.

No. I have it outdoors from spring, summer, and fall. Then I bring it in and put it in front of the patio door which faces southwest.

It often puts on flowers in December, and the smell is wonderful.

OK...Well, I really don’t know that much about it, just what I have experienced myself.
