History's 'Houdini': What the Critics Are Saying
The Hollywood Reporter ^ | September 1, 2014 | Ashley Lee

Posted on 09/01/2014 11:29:18 AM PDT by EveningStar

History Channel's magical miniseries Houdini begins tonight, starring Adrien Brody as the death-defying escape artist in a TV event that traces the arc of Houdini's life from desperate poverty to worldwide fame.

The Lionsgate/A&E Studios four-hour event also stars Kristen Connolly (House of Cards) as Bess, Harry Houdini's stage assistant and wife. Oscar nominee Uli Edel directed the project, adapted by Nicholas Meyer from the 1976 book Houdini: A Mind in Chains — A Psychoanalytic Portrait (written by his father, Bernard C. Meyer).

“Hey Rasputin, you wanna take a punch? I know you are itching...”

What a fascinating life this fellow lead.

"Lots of people on drugs in Hollywood in the 70’s"

Somehow, I don't think that's changed much.

I am almost 56 and never knew Houdini was involved in espionage..

Fascinating, it all makes sense.

After suffering through what The History Channel did with WWII and its leaders (FDR, Churchill and Stalin)and their Generals.

I’ll pass on ‘Houdini’.

Well regardless of what critics have said, I enjoyed the first two hours of the show.
Will tune in tomorrow for the finale.

>> Apparently History Channel thinks there's a market for it. <<

Based on the lukewarm reviews, I'll skip it. In any case, we now have:

Houdini (1953)—played by Tony Curtis
The Great Houdini (1976)—played by Paul Michael Glaser
Young Harry Houdini (1987)—played by Wil Wheaton & Jeffrey DeMunn
Houdini (1998)—played by Johnathon Schaech
Houdini (2014)—played by Adrien Brody

So how about being creative and doing a biopic about someone we HAVEN'T seen depicted in a movie before, History Channel?

Had to leave with Harry still locked in the German ambassador’s safe to watch Portrait of Jennie on TCM - what I saw, with Houdini drafted to play a sort of slight-of-hand James Bond, was pretty far-fetched.....

Yeah. Houdini and his wife were lounging in bed and he asks her what kind of cigarette she is smoking. She says, “Mexican.” It was obvious she was puffing on a doobie.

I nominate Ormer Locklear.

Wing walker extraordinaire during the barnstorming days of the 1920s and 30s!

Is that obscure enough?

Or John Browning, Eugene Stoner, James H.”Dutch” Kindelberger. The designer of the P-51 Mustang fighter of WWII. Or John Garand, creator of the M-1 rifle and the myriad machines that mass produced it.
