WHAT ON EARTH is that, was a question muttered in TheJournal.ie offices, and, if Twitter is anything to go by plenty of other places in Dublin this lunchtime.
Why?
Well, well, these two planes carried out a fly-past of Croke Park (and, by extension, the city) as part of this afternoons American Football event and scared the bejaysus out of everyone.
There were reports of car and house alarms being set off in the area.
While one reader contacted us to say it sounded like an earthquake from Meath Street and was a very frightening experience.
The glass shook at a pub in Westmoreland Street as I was walking by, another TheJournal.ie reader told us.
No doubt there were also quite a few startled seagulls in the city in the wake of the fly-past, which, at the risk of labouring a point, was really really INCREDIBLY LOUD
Ireland was neutral during WWII, right?
What American football event?
PSU vs. UCF in Dublin at Croke Park for the “Croke Park Classic”. Game was a home game for UCF, moved to Ireland.
PSU won the game on a last second field goal 26-24. Hackenberg threw for over 450 yards.
Game took place at 8:30AM est yesterday.
McConnell AFB.
thanks
Hard to see that as a “home game” for UCF, lol
I spent six years there as a Missile Combat Crew Member (Titan II ICBM). Back then we only had the KC-135A tankers on the flight line. The FANGs had the F-105s and then transitioned to the F-4.
LOL!!
LOL Yeah, ok. You were OUTSIDE the pub. Got it.
The Blue Angels do a couple of days of practice then participate in an air show on Sat and Sun every year (except 2013 because of the “government shut down” and $$s). I’ve watched them for many years and never get tired of seeing them or hearing the sound! Love it! We do keep pets and babies inside but the rest of us yell, scream and wave (especially when they fly low over where we watch them).
Yeah, I was going to mention that. And if a Harley rolling down the street can set off car alarms, you can bet an F-16 cruising low at high subsonic speeds is going to do the same.
It most probably would! :-)
Me too. I was at the Eastern States Exposition a few years back when a group of A-10s did a flyover. The crowd roared in approval. It made my day.
As retired USAF absolutely agree, F-4 Phantoms are the loudest of all.
You should have been at Korat RTAFB, Thailand during the Vietnam war. In 1969 when the F-4’s took over from the Thuds they had before that, it was said we had to pay for several water buffalos that died of heart attacks due to the noise and shock!
I saw a B-1 fly low level over a mountain, just over the crest. That was last summer. Nice!
McConnell, yes.
I grew up in Valdosta GA, home of Moody AFB, and there were Phantoms flying over my house every day. Loved it.
Spent a week in a 'motel' near the end of the runway at Dobbins AFB, with C-5s taking off and landing. What a sound.
Thanks for the link. That was a very enjoyable read.
I like her writing. Smart and funny.
