EARTH CITY, Mo. -- The St. Louis Rams released defensive end Michael Sam on Saturday, according to multiple league sources.
Sam's efforts to become the first openly gay player in NFL history came up just short in a competition against undrafted rookie Ethan Westbrooks.
Westbrooks is one of nine defensive linemen to land a roster spot.
Sam officially hit waivers Saturday at 4 p.m. ET when all NFL teams had to trim their rosters down to the league-mandated 53 players. From there, the other 31 teams will have 24 hours to put in a claim for Sam.

That sucks ass.......er......that blows......er...... Bummer
Miami needs an end
The laying on of hands just makes matters worse. But thanks, anyway.
Not believing he’s gay. Or Jason Collins either. I think they saw their chance to grab their 15 minutes of fame. Collins extended his career by one half season. Sam will catch a team because libs have guilt.
Homophobia!
He had his best game against the Dolphins, so perhaps Miami would be a likely team to take him.
I bet South Beach would love that.
Sam is not a Ram. But could he be a Packer?
I was waiting for the Calgary Stampeters.
There have already been gay players. Sam was using it as a gimmick.
Is ESPN on suicide watch?
The NFL should be required to have 25% gay players by volume.
Has the requisite Obama phone call praising him for his courage been placed yet?
Either way St. Louis is now going to have blacks and homos breaking stuff and shooting glitter bombs all over the place.
It’s going to be FABULOUS, yo.
At least when gays riot, instead of looting and breaking stuff, they just redecorate it.
In the end though, apparently what doomed him was that he didn't make any impact on special teams, and if you're a projected 2nd stringer, you'd better at least better make an impact on special teams, or else there is no justification for keeping him on the squad.
“There have already been gay players.”
True, but as far as I can remember, they ‘came out’ only after their NFL careers were finished.
Not an analyst on ESNP will say Sam was released because he was not good enough to make the team. Every one of them will make excuses for him and say the Rams just had too many players and someone had to be cut but Sam proved he could play in the NFL and it was only a matter of time before another team picked him up. This will be the story repeated over and over. Sam will also be interviewed on The View with the rest of the girls and of course they’ll say he was released because the NFL is still very much homophobic. The White House invitation will come within a week and his hero in the White House will probably make him the LGBT Czar. Life is good for this sodomite. Very good.
