Raising fish on land seems like the sort of idea youd get while recovering from general anesthesia. But for three McGill University researchers, it made perfect sense. How else would you find out what behavioral and physiological changes might have taken place when fish first made the move from sea to land over 400 million years ago?
"I used to look at fins and their motion, and I always thought it was so interesting and complex," says Emily Standen, lead author of a study published in Nature today, and an evolutionary biomechanics researcher who now works at the University of Ottawa. "And then I thought, wow, how does that change from a fin to something that might work on land? Thats how this project started."

Good for the fish. They did not jump species, however. Darwin’s observation of adaptations does NOT prove “evolution”.
Evolution cannot be “proved.” It is a belief system, not subject to experimental verification.
Later research on Golapagos demonstrated that beak size was a function of harvest quality and quantity which changed virtually year to year. Darwin’s natural selection was speeded up a bit.
Wow! I can go fishing from my 4 wheeler.
And God made the beast of the earth after his kind, and cattle after their kind, and every thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind: and God saw that it was good.
Genesis 1:25
While theyre at it, why not teach apes to talk?
The fish required intervention... it didn’t just “happen”.
I would say something but I’d get banned...: )
Ha Ha! Next thing you know, they’ll need a bicycle!
“...Darwin’s natural selection was speeded up a bit...”
Darwin was a Victorian era man who observed patterns. There is no proof that this “selection” caused a cross species evolvement.
All the frickin’ fish did was learn to use his fins to push himself along the bottom because the water was low for heaven’s sake. It’s like a dog learning a trick that mimics human behavior say lifting the toilet lid, sitting on the toilet seat, then taking a dump and flushing it. That doesn’t mean he’s human or ever will be. Their experiment didn’t even come close to proving evolutionary change...
Snort.
I sure hope they don’t try this experiment with gar.
It’s the creature from the black lagoon!
The cruel ghoul from the cool pool.
