Did alimony kill Robin Williams?
At least in part it sure did. Paying out over $30 million to ex-wives who were allowed to attach themselves to Williams bank account like comatose patients on feeding tubes would be enough to make Gandhi angry and depressed.
While states are finally, gradually catching up to the modern age in terms of alimony (now they call it maintenance as in high maintenance) the practice of men paying women because they once were married is not just primitive but, yes, sexist.
Yeah, go ahead, call me anti-feminist, call me whatever you want, but the truth is alimony (which is different from child support and fair distribution of assets acquired during the marriage) doesnt mean the non-working spouse is entitled to live as high as the Kardashians. Its that concept that is fundamentally anti-feminist.
No, Im not talking out of my head. Im talking as a formerly divorced, unemployed woman who didnt ask for alimony, just a fair amount of child support for our then-2-year-old daughter, which never happened anyway.

This should be interesting.
Linda StasiI would have to change my last name if it were spelled like the East German secret polices colloquial appellation.
Something is very wrong with this system.
You can rent a lot of hookers for $30 million. And they will even tell you they love you.
RE: Something is very wrong with this system.
Let’s call it by what it is — INDENTURED SERVITUDE.
We have it in America.
Moral of the story, don’t get married in a State that requires alimony
Every time I read something like this, I realize how rare the court commissioner’s and guardian ad litem’s behavior were in my son’s case. The commissioner told his then-wife to get out and get a job, and to provide the court with evidence that she had applied at 10 places per week until she secured a job. Won’t go into details, but SHE has to pay HIM child support, and our son has full legal custody and primary placement of our grandson.
Moral of the story, don’t marry a gold digger. Or better yet, don’t get married at all.
Call it ‘prostitution’. That’s what it is.
My situation was just the opposite. Since WI is a Community Property state and *I* was the responsible (dammit!) one - *I* got the added bonus of paying my ex for his bad behavior to buy my farm (which I paid for in the first place!) to be rid of him.
That was after he stole all of our retirement funds.
So, before you all start bashing women, it works both ways, Kids.
Tough lesson to learn, but I couldn’t be happier. :)
That's me. So long as my ex and her live-in never marry, they both get to live off of me.
RE: Moral of the story, dont get married in a State that requires alimony
All states have alimony statutes in effect. However, these statutes differ both in the type of alimony permitted and in the requirements that must be met to receive alimony.
In every state, therefore, a spouse can request alimony as long as she meets the state’s criteria. Additionally, courts in alimony states are allowed to review a divorce case and award alimony if it is warranted by the spouse’s health or facts of the divorce.
The variety of names for alimony, types of permissible alimony awards, exceptions to those permitted awards, requirements to receive alimony, length of time alimony can be made and other aspects of a state’s alimony structure among the 50 states makes it impossible to create a list of the types of alimony states throughout the nation.
My hunch is that his primary problem leading to his choice of suicide was a fading career and dwindling finances. Probably why the most current wife promoted the Parkinson’s meme. She’s also in the golden ticket winner club.
Ultimately though, at fault was his total lack of self control.
The rich are different than us.
this is what I heard from day one,,,
Times have so much that a woman can have a history of adultery, and still claim up ridiculous alimony. Courts are tilted towards women in every way, including child custody cases.
That recent book, "Men on Strike", is a good anecdotal read on why men are not getting married anymore.
Many women are serial ex-wives, marrying and divorcing for profit. Men are really stupid for getting taken by this obvious scam, but as P.T. Barnum observed, “There’s a sucker born every minute.”
Each of William’s x’s had to live 24/7 with a coke fiend. They earned it and he was more than happy to pay anything to be left alone, until he realized he would need another wife to go through it all over again.
I guess he should have taken the possibility into consideration when he was screwing around on them.
I have an interesting solution to this mess: In “no fault” divorce, the one that wants the divorce leaves. leaves the house, the money, the kids, etc.
Period.
Maybe people will learn the meaning of “for better or worse”.
And I’m only talking about “no fault”. And yes, I know this will cause some people to try to build a case against their spouse before they do the deed, but it should still have to get past “innocent until proven guilty”.
