The simultaneous eruptions of this filovirus virus in widely separated zones strongly suggests that the virulent Zaire ebola strain (ZEBOV) was deliberately introduced to test an antidote in secret trials on unsuspecting humans.
The cross-border escape of ebola into neighboring Sierra Leone and Liberia indicates something went terribly wrong during the illegal clinical trials by a major pharmaceutical company. Earlier this year, rural residents eagerly stood in line to receive vaccinations from foreign-funded medical programs. Police Arresting People Preventing Health Duties - Col. Massaquoi

Chris Clarence Massaquoi, has disclosed that the police have begun arresting those individuals who are impairing the work of healthcare employees. Despite the threats posed by the Ebola virus disease in the Mano River Union countries, the Government of the Republic of Guineahas announced its borders with Liberia will remain open. Guinean Ambassador to Liberia, His Excellency S.E. ElhadjAbdoulaye Dore, told The Analyst that the various border points entering into Liberia from Guinea have remained open since the outbreak of the virus.
“The only problem being faced at the borders right now is with the authorities on the other side who are not allowing easy entry into their country. For us, we have no problem with people leaving and entering as long as they can adhere to measures put in place. We have all the detergent and anti-bacteria materials needed,” he explained.The Guinean envoy indicated that that measureshave been put in place in Guinea to make sure that the virus is not spread to neighboring countries.Ambassador Dore said that though the spread of the virus in West Africa was said to have started in Guinea, the Guinean authorities have never considered closing its border with neighboring countries.
He explained that with the alarming death rate caused by the virus in the sub-region, the Guinean authorities have also put in to place measures that will ensure that people entering and leaving the country are tested for Ebola.
Ambassador Dore maintained that Guinea has never shut down its borders as reported on the BBC regular morning “News Day” program, saying he was shocked to learn that their borders have been shut down, claiming that the borders are functioning well and businesses are going on as usual.
He asserted that the Guinean authority is doing everything possible to maintain good diplomatic relations with its neighbors and that nothing will prompt them to take such action.Ambassador Dore said various testing centers have already been established so as to conduct test on suspected Ebola patients in and around the country.He named the Guigadou testing center as the main center between Guinea and Liberia which is being used by both governments to carry on testing for Liberians and Guineans as a means of detecting suspected Ebola cases.

Liberia: ArcelorMittal Folds Partly -Terminates Expansion Contract

When the National Task Force on Ebola, anytime from now, announces the last infected person healed or dead, with no additional cases emerging afterwards, Liberia would sigh a huge relief from the virus’ nightmarish devastation. Though Ebola-related deaths would have come to an end, it would not be the end of the trouble for Liberia. Pundits are predicting that the devastated population would then be awakening to an equally ruinous crisis—a biting economic crisis, which if not managed would result into political crisis. And the roots of those crises have begun to form right now. The postwar country’s largest investor, Arcelormittal, is parking out of here and there are signs that other major concessionaries would soon be freezing their jobs-underpinning operations, as The Analyst’s Edward Palmer reports.
Due to the evolving situation of the current Ebola outbreak in West Africa, contractors working on the phase 2 expansion project of ArcelorMittal have declared force majeure and are moving out of the country, according to a communication given to this paper on Monday by the company.
ArcelorMittal’s Chief Executive Officer for Mining, Bill Scotting, said while the termination of contracts for several companies sub- contracting for Arcelor Mittal is taking effect, the priority for Liberia and any other affected countries right now is to contain and ultimately stop the current outbreak of Ebola.
“We are providing full support to the government in this regard and taking every precaution to protect all of our employees on the ground in Liberia”, he added.Mr. Scotting assured that ArcelorMittal has made a long-term commitment to Liberia and that the company will maintain this commitment.
Acknowledging that the recent developments are very alarming, Mr. Scotting noted that at present, the company’s management believes that the emergency procedures and other measures developed and currently in place at all ArcelorMittal sites in Liberia make it possible to continue phase one of their operations.
He noted that since the outbreak of the deadly Ebola virus in Liberia, ArcelorMittal has taken every precaution to protect its employees and operations, including providing thermo flash scanners to test for fever in all employees and visitors to all ArcelorMittal Liberia locations.
Mr. Scotting added that 500 full sets of personal protective equipment (PPE) have already been distributed to ArcelorMittal hospitals and other hospitals and clinics in Nimba, Buchanna, and training has been provided to health care workers and employees. Ebola awareness sessions were conducted by a leading Ebola prevention and control expert, and an infectious disease nurse has been brought in who serves as the company’s in house expert that is now working closely with ArcelorMittal hospital team, Mr. Scotting confided through his communications.
ArcelorMittal is currently mining and shipping 5 million tons of ore a year in Liberia from its operations in Yekepa and Buchanna described as Phase one of its operations.The company is also working on an expansion project described as phase-2 that will see shipments rise to 15 million tons of ore with first production planned by the end of 2015.There are reports that several other major companies operating in the country are on red alert and anxiously monitoring the situation.
“Right now, we have put the emergency at level 4 with level 6 being the high point,” said an official of Golden Veroleum Liberia (GVL) who does not want to be named in print because he was not authorized to speak on the matter. “Once it moves to level 6, we will be compelled to fold in part or in whole.”

National Chronicle Shut Down

The office of the National Chronicle newspaper was yesterday shut down by some officers of the Liberia National Police who stormed the paper’s offices on Carey Street.
However, it is not clear whether the police acted on a court’s order, or was an action in line with the State of Emergency declared recently by President Sirleaf to combat the Ebola Virus.
Late yesterday evening, several police officers went to the offices of the newspaper and ordered its closure. The presence of the officers caused fear, causing many businesses on the streets to close down their operations.
Also, the news of the police of about 100 police officers on the street was received differently in the Duala area, as people ran helter-skelter, when it was rumored in that area that there was shooting “in town” by security officers.
Earlier, it was learned that the officers went to the paper’s office to arrest its Managing Editor and publisher Philibert Brown. However, his office was closed, without Mr. Brown, being arrested.
Journalists from several media institutions thronged on the scene to know what was happening to their colleagues at the Chronicle though some were prevented by police from getting on the scene of the action.
Following hours of commotion, the president of the Press Union of Liberia (PUL) Abdullah Kamara informed anxious journalists that he had just spoken to Police Director, Chris Massaquoi who said he knew nothing about the police operation on Carey Street.
Later Mr. Brown emerged from his office and said he was a free man but his institution has been shut down by Government. He said police used tear gas to break into the offices of the Chronicle and demanded that the paper be shut down.
However, Brown was taken away from the scene by angry crowd who chanted anti-government slogans in support of the Liberian media.
No reason was given up to press time, but the closure of the paper comes days after some publications in the paper. One of which was a story that Vice President Joseph Boakai dumped President Sirleaf when he met U.S. President Obama recently in the United States where the Vice President represented President Sirleaf at the African Forum.
Meanwhile, the Vice President’s office has denied the story.
I swear I just saw on Charlie Rose The Week on KLRU (PBS) a segment on Ebola where a woman is saying so many doctors have fled Nigeria that there are only 50 left in the country so obviously they can not handle the increased Ebola victims. Rose didn’t tell her name at the end so I’ve been searching for the past several minutes but not luck. Can you or anyone help locate that segment? May have to wait until someone youtubes it or something. Either I’m crazy for imagining what she said, which is a possibility, or we’re looking at something much more serious than first thought.

Prior to the outbreak there were only 200 in the entire country, many/most of them foreigners. The foreigners have since left, many of the remaining doctors have been killed by ebola or are sick with it.
Yikes. I just ran across the news that the doctors have been on strike and Indian doctors have been MADE to stay and treat the patients. Scary situation especially if it spreads. I can see US medical personnel walking away, too.
Also, that they’re run out of the super duper magical miracle serum they gave to Brantly. Of course, that might just a case of if enough money is thrown at the company, there will be more.

The ‘50 doctors for the whole country’ is, IIRC either Sierra Leone or Liberia.
Sierra Leone/Liberia/Guinea are West African level of standard of living. Nigeria has oil money and is closer to what we think of when we think Mexico.
